I'm looking for a type of threadlocker that is applied to only one side of the thread that is somewhat of a pink or light red in color. It is possibly a paste, and is dried prior to installation. I have even seen some nuts and bolts sold with this stuff already applied. So what is this stuff?
 
Dave. Do you have any idea what the shelf life is on this tube?

If this stuff is usable for a year or so it sure looks like a better thing than regular loktite.

This gel has better shelf life than the regular locktite. I have had some of that gel sitting around for months and it still works great. With regular locktite I have a very small hole in the tip of the bottle. Those are the places that locktite hardens up. I have to jam a pin into the regular locktite but the gel doesn't have that problem.
To clarify, this gel locktite is not the stuff that factories put on head bolts and other parts. The gel Locktite needs to be applied just before assembly.
 
What you're seeing inthe hardware store is Lotite Patch. It's reapplied by the manufacturer under a licence from LocTite. It is a one time use.

Gel and liquid are best for the shop.

I know they claim shelf life but I've have a big bottle of blue medium for 9+ years. Still works fine. :D
 
So, I did go buy some of that Permetex Threadlocker, and I like the way it goes on, Thanks Dave.
Gert, I loaded that pic of the ff assembly as I was thinking about starting a thread to discuss issues with it. If it was a good product Warn would not have gotten rid of it. I do see some positives of that design though, especially when it comes to flat towing and it has super hard axle shafts. It does have some design flaws that I have been putting up with, like keeping the bearings tight. Replacement parts do seem very hard to find also.

I wouldn't use anything more than medium strength. You are going to have to take them out someday.
 
Just to expand on what 73CJ posted, dri-loc is applied to factory fasteners and remains in that state until used. When installed the threads releases a quick curing resin that fills all the voids in the threads then cures to a tight seal.
 
So I looked up Locktite Dri-loc 201, and that seems to be the stuff I originally had in mind. After using the Permatex Gel that seems like the stuff i'll stick with. I did smear some on a bolt and will be letting dry to duplicate the Dri-Loc to see how that works.
 
Loctit also makes their product in a glue stick that is kind of handy. As for shelf life these products are anaerobic meaning they dry in the absence of air. Leaving the bottle open won't cause it to dry but it will suffer from evaporation of the liquid in the compound making it thick. As for removing a "glued" fastner 325 degrees for standard and around 500 high temp products will cause the thread locker to release.
