First Jeep project here. I see I have a a lot of reading ahead of me. Sorry if this is a repeat thread. Currently have a stock 1979 CJ with a slight lift and 35's. This is not a rock crawler it sees a bit of county road driving 50-60 mph and back roads and logging roads. currently has the T-150 , Dana 20 and the AMC20 in it. the AMC20 is worn out and I would like disc brakes in the rear for aesthetics only. The T-150 and transfere case both leak and need work so here is my question.
I am considering a T-176 , Dana 300 and Dana 44 swap. What nightmare am I starting and if someone has done it can you advise on kits and expectations. I would hope to find another jeep that I could perhaps use as a kit for the Transmission and the Transfer Case .

You might consider a Dana 44 from a Honda Passport or Izusu. You will find them with 4.10 or 4.30 gears and disc brakes. You need fabrication skills to narrow and weld new spring mounts. The problem might be the 6 on 5.5 bolt pattern. Also, make sure to get the E brake cables. They can easily adapt to late CJ cable.

The T-150 and T-176 use the same bellhousing.
The T-176 has a 1 1/8" diameter input shaft, the T-150 has a 1 1/16 diameter input shaft so you will have to use the correct size pilot bushing.
I will be doing about the same thing hopefully some time this month.
I have a 1980 CJ5 and recently purchased a 1972 CJ5 with a freshly rebuilt engine. The "new" engine is a 1978 and was coupled to a T-150 Transmission . My 1980 CJ has the T-176 and a Dana 300 Xfer case.
I purchased a new Luk clutch kit for a 1980 CJ and replaced the pilot bushing in the 1978 engine block.
