towing a cj7

I'm going 100 miles the latter part of March. I want to take my CJ7 that has a tow bar. How do I position the shifters? of course the tranny will be in neutrl. What about the Transfer Case ?

I don't want to confuse the OP, but I thought you needed the xfercase in gear to keep the bearings lubed (unless you remove the rear driveshaft)

I've never flat towed my CJ before....so I don't know personally. It's just something I heard.

Not what the OEM owners manual sez.......

Lock hubs-T'case in neutral and tranny(manual)in top gear.

What I do-disco the rear DS at the axle and hang it out of the way.
T'case and tranny in "N" and leave hubs unlock'd. I do this as I'm not taking any chances with tearing up my 4:1 t'case. I have tow'd my '7' all over the western USA this way with no issues.
DON'T FORGET to unlock the steering wheel.

As Lumpy stated I am familiar with the OM description as well as many people towing their Jeeps this way.
Transmission in high gear TC in neutral hubs and steering unlocked.
But doesn't hurt to DC rear driveshaft

Yes you would be right sir this is what mine says.
"1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position to unlock steering wheel.
2. Shift Transmission into gear and the Transfer Case into N (Neutral)
3. Turn selective drive hubs to 4X4 position, for axle lubrication.
Note: When towing a vehicle over 200 miles, stop towing every 200 mies. With the Transfer Case still in neutral and Transmission in gear, start and rev engine for about one minute to circulate oil in the Transfer Case .

If you are only going 100 miles I don't see going to the trouble of pulling the drive shaft but if I was going over 200 miles I think I would.Where I go camping is just short of 100 miles and I have never pulled it.

Will someone please help me understand why the Transmission should be in gear instead of neutral?

I'm not arguing that it should be done any differently than what's recommended, but I really am having trouble understanding how it makes any difference.

All of this is based on making sure the oil slingers are moving if driveshafts are turning. The 20 and 300 are different. I'm not good at remembering all the details so I just disco my DS so nothing is turning and don't worry about it.

Don't know why the tranny would need to be in gear????

Wooly, the tranny only needs to be in gear if the driveshaft remains connected for lubrication.

Even with the tcase in neutral it could still turn, which would then turn the Transmission output shaft if in neutral. The Transmission is designed with a front input shaft oil slinger, there is no rear output shaft oil slinger. If the Transmission is turned by the output shaft there is no means of lubrication If the Transmission is in gear it will not turn.
