I found a CJ7 tub on CL for $100. It came with front fenders, hood, windshield frame and grill. It is rusty as hell but I've been wanting to build a CJ trailer anyway so I bought it. Someone welded new floors in but they did not cut the old rusted floors out first.
I have a old bass boat trailer I'm going to cut up to use the frame and axle to build my jeep trailer with.

I was going to use my hand grinder to cut the tub with, but I discovered it just eat the cut-off wheels up. So out comes the sawsall, it went through it like butter.

I'v got to do some rust removal and weld up a frame under the tub to mount to the trailer frame. (most of the tub mounts are rusted out)
I'll post more as I get the chance to work on it.:chug:

Looks like a good start! I wish I would have had the forethought to cut my CJ7 up in the right place to make a trailer out of it. But I cut it too far back to keep the box intact. :(

I had a chance to weld the trailer frame last night. I set it up with SOA and didn't like it, was just to high, so for now it's now SUA. I want to find a set of CJ springs. Of course I can always change it if I put a bigger lift on my CJ.:D
I had to take 30" out of the axle.

More to come.:chug:

what would make a trailer is a J-10 bed, I don't think I will donate mine for the project but just saying.
these are all good jobs.

Nice project Thorwon! :chug: That's going to be a cool trailer fer shizzle! ;) A roll bar would be a nice touch, and a tie down point as well.
BTW I sure do miss that perdy red clay and all of those pine trees! Makin' me home sick! :)

I have been able to work on the trailer off and on during the last week. I just haven't had my camera (my mother inlaw had it).
I got the mounts welded on the tub and frame, then bolted the tub on. I used tub mounts for a CJ5 from Energy Suspension (poly).
I welded a frame for the front out of small channel that I picked up at a local auction. I'm covering it with some 14 ga. metal I had. It'll be four pieces across the front so I hope I can weld it good enough to make it look right. If not I'll smooth it with bondo.
The floor I pieced together with small pieces of 14 ga. when I get it all welded I'm going to sand blast it all, prime the tub and coat the inside with fiberglass.:chug:

Pretty cool little project. Thanx for sharing it with us. Are you going to leave the CJ7 wheelwells in place or trim them down for more overall room? Ive seen people use Scrambler tubs for the extra length and different wheelwells. :(

I'm going to leave the wheelwells like they are for now. I doubt I ever put tires larger than 31s on it and I think I'll have plenty of clearance for them.:)

I was refering to extra room inside the trailer not for larger tires , but thanx you answered my question anyway. :)

I'll have to look. I had not thought of that??????????????

I got the front of the trailer welded up and sprayed some primer on the outside.

The inside will be sand blasted then I'll prime it.

More later.:)

I got to spend a couple of hours on the trailer today. I used a heavy steel shelf I got from work to make a place up front to mount a tool box and jerry-cans. I started to cut the handles off of it but thought I could use them to strap things down.
I'm going to bolt it down using tub mount pucks. Right now it's just sitting on the frame.
I think I'm going to cover the rest of the frame on the front with metal.

Very nice Thor. The area that you are looking at just covering ? Maybe take your best cooler and make a template of it. Then make a nice tray for it so you can keep it outta the CJ5 . Just an opinion. Anything you usually would throw in the Jeep try to make a spot for. That way the stuff you forgot to make a spot for can fit in behind your seats. :D

this has been a great project and I have enjoyed following it very much
Looking very good Thorwon

Good build! I like the trailer I might have to build one soon.

I would than have something to practice with to learn how to back up a trailer. :D

some fender flairs would be way cool.

Number 1 trick for backing a trailer, do it very slow. If you don't let it get completely out of control it makes you look better than you really are.

it works for me on the two or three times a year I have to back a trailer.:o
