I have a 84 CJ7 with Dana 300 . Might be a stupid question, but I am trying to check oil level in t case. I took off the square head plug and stuck my finger in it. The gears were wet but I couldn't feel a oil level. Is that where you check it?

Any special type of gear oil? I'm guessing the square plug is the fill hole?

I appreciate it. I usually do minor work on my vehicles but this brain farted me.

Here's another question... the Chilton's manual states to use the same viscosity oil as the Transmission (which calls for Dexron II in T-4 and T-5 tranny's). Also mentions draining and replacing both at the same time, eludes to them being interconnected, but then states to 80W-90 gear oil. Thoughts? I'll likely use gear oil for the Transfer Case and the automatic Transmission "fluid" for my manual Transmission ... but wondering if anyone else read this or had an explanation for why the conflicting advice??

Don't put ATF in your Dana 300 . The oil systems are only connected if the rear main shaft seal in the tranny and the input shaft seal in the Transfer Case both go out. You would have oil on the driveway if that happens.

DO NOT USE ATF!!-----AMC paid a huge price for that screw-up!
NOTE- 'Our' Jeep T-5 is NOT the 'World-Class'' T-5 spoke of, in the article.

(T-5 ) If your interested in using what the factory, oil companies, and dealerships recommend it has to meet SM 9224 specs. Two that do:
Amsoil synthetic manual synchromesh Transmission fluid 5W-20
Pennzoil part# 3501 = synthetic 5w-20
