After a 2 year hiatus I have finally gotten back to working on my CJ7 . I picked up a donor vehicle for the solid frame. It also came with an AMC 360 that I am going through, a T-5 Transmission and a Dana 300 Transfer Case .

My question is for a mostly street driven vehicle with mild trails and mild mud on 31's. Would the T-5 /Dana 300 be a better combo than the T-150 /Dana 20 that my AMC 304 had behind it? Will the 360 be too much for either to handle?

The T-5 is well known for even being too weak for the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l six. I chewed up a couple of them years ago. You might be able to get yours to hold up with the AMC 304 by not going any larger than 31" tires and a lower set of axle gears would help also. The Dana 300 is an excellent t/c and will do well with either engine. Go easy on the skinny pedal and don't be too hard on the shifting either.

I would NOT run a T-5 behind any '8'.
I would also be look'n at 1 piece axles(Moser;)) for the '20' rearend.

Good advice from Torx and LG, I agree as well.

I'm with everyone else on the T-5 . The T-150 however should be able to stand up to what your going to put it through. I had a T-50 behind a 360 already and it held it's own. It definitely don't be a rock crawler though with the tall ratios that Transmission has.

Thanks guys. Was worried about the T-5 behind the 360. Already have a 1 piece axle kit ready to install. Need to figure out what gear ratio axles the donor has to decide whether to use my old axles which I think are 3.54's. PO didn't know what was in them.

If the donor has wide track axles they mainly came with 2.72 and 3.31's. Best way is to open them up and start counting teeth. The tooth count is usually stamped in the ring gear as well. You just divide the 2 numbers then and that's your ratio.

:agree:

BTW: Those ratios Peter listed, is just part of what 'killed' so many T-5 's.

Or...if you're lucky like I was....and it was originally a 4cyl equipped CJ, it would have 4.10's

That I will have to check. Also noticed front hubs are 5 bolts. Does that make them weaker than the 6 bolts?

A lot of people think so, and honestly, more bolts will inherently be stronger. But if you are able to keep them tight, they will not be a problem.

I don't think the T-5 was ever an option behind the 4 cyl but with all the swapping going on who knows. Maybe he'll get real lucky and someone had them regeared to 4.56/4.88 :D

My '84 came stock 4cyl/T-5 /Dana 300 . 4.10 gears

I'm running a T-5 and AMC 360 combo. I was running the original T-5 /AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l tranny/motor and 5th gear went out at 150K miles. I rebuilt it to much disagreement to this board. They may end up being right, because it's listed as a light duty Transmission . ...Because the T-5 will bolt right on to that AMC 360 without adapters, it's something to think about. I didn't hesitate when I learned that.

I love having 5th gear and a 360. I have an AX-15 waiting on that T-5 to tear up (would need a rebuild), so it's all about what you have and less aggravation. IMO

Thanks for proving me wrong Jim. Are you sure you remember what your Jeep came with stock? :D :poke:
Lol....It also came with AC :D

4-'popper' w/AC. Must have been pretty gutless.

Very early on many SR4 's were replaced with T-4 's and T-5 's. Back in the '80s the Jeep folks were pushing me to replace my SR4 with one or the other. Went with the T-18 and 231 Dauntless Buick 225 V6 instead.

I have the 2 options of transmissions. T-150 and T-5 . Or if I really wanted I could steal the Transmission out of my Yj. But it's a runner so probably not going that route.
