Took the rear cover off today. Not that it matters but it has a 3.31:1 ratio. I say that it doesn't matter because even if it had 4.10's in it, there are still a few teeth with heavy rusting.

If that's the worst of it. I have seen gears like that run for many years.

you never want to pull a Differential cover and find that. Not a horrible wear pattern though. The rust looks like its out of the pattern, of course the gear will tend to polish the wear pattern section. Is the diff noisy? How's the back lash feel? If all seems good, I'd run'em till they pop or you change gearing. Warning, if you don't already know, re-gearing is expensive to have done.

Seeing as they're 3.31's I figure I'll go with my 3.54's with the trac lock(which is probably useless by now). I have another spare axle out back I will check. though the gear tag on the housing indicates a 3.07 if not changed.

I didn't bother checking backlash since I wasn't planning on using it unless it was shorter gear that my 3.54. Noise is unknown since its in a non driver. just a rolling chassis at the moment. Wish I had one of my CJ's running but for now I have to settle for my 2.5 YJ... :down:
 
What size tires are you run'n?

If your gonna go to 33's, look at 3:73 R&P.
That ratio will work well from 31"-33" tires.

If you go with 3.54's from 3.31's you won't notice much difference at all in your jeep. I'm sorry but to get where you want to be you are going to need carriers and at least 3.73's and sine I went from 3.73's to 3.31's for the road. You are look at 4.11's at least.
