Hey Guys,

Interested in buying this Tuffy box, but not sure if it will fit my 81 CJ5 . Tuffy says it only fits the CJ7 . The box dimensions are 29 1/8" L x 34 1/2" W x 4 1/8" H. The CJ5 has a 35" L X 36" W Cargo space, right??

Jeep Full Length Under Seat Drawer

I would say no because you have a lot of space from the seat to the tailgate on a 7 and on a 5 you have almost none.

It should fit in the rear of a CJ5 . Only concern would be opening the drawer, I don't know offhand what the width of the tailgate opening is.

I would imagine Tuffy saying it doesn't fit a CJ5 would be because of how the rear seat is mounted. Mine was (I no longer have one), rather low to the floor. If you don't ever intend on having a rear seat, it should work.

Bottom line: Order it, see if it fits. Return if it doesn't.

On a side note: I'm considering having these guys make up a custom tool box for the rear of my CJ5 : CUSTOM TOOL BOXES FOR TRUCKS

I like the idea of having a lower drawer (or two), but also want access from the top.

Haven't contacted them yet, but if/when I do, I wonder if there is sufficient interest ($$$) for them to fab up a few of them?

Yeah I was thinking the same about the back of the seat even on the 7. The front of the back seat is all open but back is closed

Thanks for the feedback guys. So i went ahead and got the larger capacity model. I could use the extra storage space, and Tuffy said it will fit a CJ5 . I also never use the back seat anyway. I'll give you guys an update with pics, when i get it installed.

Keep us up to date. I really like the Tuffy stuff (I have their center console, and speaker boxes), but the price they want for what is basically a large sheetmetal box, scares the bejeesus out of me...

Will Do! I'm also a fan of Tuffy stuff. The PO installed a center console in my CJ, and i love it. Unfortunately this time i have to cough up the cash myself. I know the price is crazy, but the few cheaper alternatives out there, like Smittybilt, have sketchy reviews. I would be kicking myself if i saved $50-100, only to have the whole thing fall apart in a couple months.

Hey Guys! Just got it installed. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. The box itself is a high quality item. Even with all my gear, the drawer glides open like its on ice. It fits perfectly in the back of my Jeep, like its an OEM product. There is maybe a quarter inch gap between the Wheelwell, and the box, so there's no chance of it moving around. I was tempted to buy some dividers, because reviewers were complaining of items shifting in the box making a lot of noice, but i haven't had a problems.
The only downside is the instillation. If you're lucky enough to have all the holes lined up in your vehicle, then its going to take you maybe 30 minutes to install the whole thing. As for me, it took my hours to get everything setup. I had to drill new holes into the bed of the truck. There were two layers of steel i had to get through, which made the tuffy bolts too short to mount the box. After a trip to the hardware store, i eventually got it mounted.
The only other complaint is the paint job. I thew my half doors on top of the box, and i noticed it scratched it up a fair amount. I sprayed on some flat black enamel. If that doesn't do the job, then i'll probably just lay a rubber mat on top.

Can I check out these photos again? Link broken but I'm interested in getting the same setup. Thanks!

Turns out the iPad Tapatalk app doesn't like letting me view pics. Just viewed in the browser. Like the setup. Thinking of doing something similar.

Harbor freight has a decent assortment of cheap toolboxes that I've used in the trunk of other vehicles. Haven't yet found one that fits nicely in the back of the CJ.

Hey buddy! Sorry for the delay. I'll still try to post some more photos tomorrow. Smittybilt has one for like $300. Not sure how well it fits on a CJ though. I think Tuffy is the only manufacturer that has the built quality to make the drawer last indefinitely. Seems like the main point of failure is the drawer hinges. Having to pull in and out 200+ pounds of tools, is just too much for most of them.

Some more pics of my Tuffy Drawer. You can see those scratches on top. I'm thinking about spraying on some Bedliner.
