Steering Turn signal short in steering column '85 CJ7

My turn signal switch is shorting out so that both tail lights come on regardless of direction. When the switch is free from the steering column just one (the correct one!) comes on. When I tighten the switch screws the signals short again. The problem seems to be the contacts behind the switch, but I cannot find any information about these contacts. How do I keep them from shorting out?
Here is a pic inside my steering column. The contacts are to the upper-right. I don't know if they are bent at the correct angle, or if they should be bent at all. Any help would be appreciated!
