Anyone tell me what size & type wrench/socket I need to remove the retaining bolts? I'd like to get the pinion seal changed before it rains.

mine are 5/16 hex head, I think some are 1/4 12 point. It all depends on what was in the new strap kit the PO put on. And you should change the straps when you change the joints.
 
or better yet, change them out for the U-bolt style for better strength. IIRC you just drill the yolks out enough to slide the U-bolts in.
