please dont flame me on this cause its been asked so much im sure but.
me and my neighbor more or less inherited an old jeep he thinks its a 76-78 but we are un sure we know nothing about it really other than its most likely to have a 351 ford motor in it and a 2bbl carb
but we are trying to fiugar it if its a CJ5 or CJ7 i know the one is 10 inches longer but any other ways to tell like i said we are both clueless on jeeps
we dont know where the vin is cause there was a sticker but its so gone you can not read it
thank yall very much chris

Along with what the others have said .... CJ5 has a hump in the door jam .... CJ7 has square door jams and is a few inches longer, deeper too, but not many notice that.

Engines - It is possible to have a ford engine in your jeep, but that swap isn't nearly as popular as say a Chevy. Be aware there are a lot of Ford and GM parts on AMC engines. And there seems to be bunch of different hues of blue paint on AMC engines.

Take a bunch of pictures and post'em here. You'll get answers to questions you never thought of asking.

Vin numbers should be on a plate riveted to the firewall somewhere arounf the break master cylinder .... at least on the older jeeps that is where it can be found. Also look under the door jam on the drivers side. It should be on your title.

It was my impression that you didn't have a title, but to be complete in the answer it had to be mentioned.

Also, they are stamped on the frame, either on the passenger or drivers side near the rear axle.

As Hedgehog mentioned the vin plate is riveted on the driver side firewall under the master cylinder or heater box if earlier model. If it's an early 5 they will be attached by screws. The vin will also be stamped on the passenger side frame rail above the rear wheel hump.
