Warn tire carrier towing question!

Warn tire carrier towing question!
Good question! I got down there with a flash light, and the receiver is a solid metal tube that goes all the way through to the back of the bumper, and it looks like it's welded there.

So then you should be interested if the receiver mount is attached to the frame and how strong that receiver mount is. The later model Jeep CJ tow hitch was rated at 2000 lbs with a 200lb tongue, btw.

The receiver is definitely not attached directly to the frame. There is a tiny hole at the back of the receiver tube, and I could reach up behind the bumper and stick my finger in that hole. That said, the bumper itself is welded to the frame.

One thing to keep in mind. Although the cj will pull down the gates of hell if it needs to the problem really comes up when it is time to stop the load. Decelerating a 2000 lb load with a 4000 lb vehicle is not the kind of math you bet your life on.:D

Good point! No way I would strap on a 2000lb load to my CJ, but maybe something smaller like a M416 Trailer.

I found this really nice trailer/tent combo online, and it only weighs about 900 pounds:

What is towing? Without going to the old Webster for the definition I would have to say it is the act of “tugging” an object in a forward motion. The act of towing creates inertia within the object being tugged. What is inertia? Again in simple terms to me it means a force propelling an object in a forward motion. How do you stop inertia? Friction, and in the case of a trailer unless there is sufficient space to allow the inertial to slowly dissipate on its own through costing the friction is supplied by the tow vehicle and possibly the trailer if equipped with a braking system. That being said the tow vehicle needs to be heavy enough to keep the inertia from overcoming the tow vehicle. If not, the inertia of the trailer will literally push the tow vehicle out of the way which generally means the tow vehicle is lifted at the hinge point (the hitch) resulting in the rear tires leaving the ground resulting in an imminent crash of monumental proportions. Of course a steep hill compounds this issure. (I’m sure my layman’s version of physical science is lacking in proper terminology and form so please don’t flame me; I claim no expertise.)

No doubt a CJ with low gearing can tug a very heavy load but stopping it…. Not so much.

Well ...... yeah ...... towing an over weight trailer with most any vehicle will put strain on a braking system, I don't believe the laws of physics are by passed for any vehicle. The Jeep has some additional considerations, but if you keep things within reason there's no reason to be overly concerned. I towed a John boat for several hundred miles on a wandering duck hunt, the CJ5 never gave me a tiny bit of trouble.

True if you tow something lite you should never have a problem but I think they put that sticker there because you have the dumb**s out there that will hook a car trailer with a truck on it and try and tow it down the highway and when he ends up upside down and thinks he can get a Lawyer and get rich they have there butts coverd.
