Replaced the timing set and my pulleys don't line up with the power steering pump. They line up with the alternator. I had an occasional squeal before I did the replacement but it went away after it warmed up a bit. I'm wondering if the power steering pump needs shimmed somehow or if I should only run the belt around the accessory pulley. I'm not sure what changed. Wondering if I may have the wrong pulley. The engine is a 72 but Jeep is 79, so I may have used the 79 pulleys when I swapped engines. Was there a difference?

Are you sure you got the balancer fully seated back onto the crank shaft after you changed the gears? The balancers should be the same for both years, so the pulley mounting face is the same. But I'm not sure if the pulleys are different from 72 to 79. The 79s had a smog pump, where the 72s did not, so there would be an extra groove for the pump belt, so it seems logical that the pulleys would be different. Whether this changes belt alignment, I am not sure.

As far as I can tell the balancer is on properly. The accesory pulley and the water pump pulley match up but the power steering pump doesn't. I guess I'll check and see if the pump is installed wrong. I'd say its off by about a quarter inch.

There are differences in the pumps and pulleys if you have power steering, etc. The dept and offset of both the pump and pulleys change to match single and double V pulleys on the other accessories.

Here's a few quick pics to illustrate

Thanks for the photos. I'm thinking I have the wrong pulley on there. I need to go back through my parts collection and see if I have the pulleys that originally came with the engine. I'm guessing that I must have got the wrong one on there.

I second guessed my installation of the harmonic balancer, so I pulled everything off and am doing it with an actual tool for its installation. I originally just used the bolt but found out that wasn't sufficient. So, I got an installer and am trying to figure out how to keep it from spinning while tightening it. I thought putting it in gear would do it but it isn't. How can I stop it from spinning while I press it on with the installer?

When I install harmonic balances, I use antiseize on the crank and inside the balancer. I use a much longer bolt with several thick washers as spacers to draw in the balancer. The long bolt makes sure that I also have about an inch of threads being used. I use an impact gun and watch for the end of the crank and balancer outer edge to be flush via the washer. Then install the real bolt at the end. There isn't much room between the back of the balancer and the timing chain cover once installed.

If you don't have an impact ( or no room for one), try setting the parking brake and leaving it in gear.

Thanks for everyone's help. I got it done this evening.
