It's been a couple years since I started 'fixing' my CJ5 's ignition woes...and with help from this forum, I'm almost there. From rough idling, to timing issues, I think the perfect setup is now only lacking new jets for my Weber 32/36 DGEV E.choke. ('83 I6-AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l / TeamRush Ign. upgrade / 13 deg. BTDC / idle sp. 750 rpm)

I purchased the Jeep with the Weber carb already installed. It ran well in its native Arizona at 5,000 ft. altitude. When I brought it to its new home in KC (1,000 ft.alt.)...she ran a little rough. (The TeamRush upgrade helped tremendously).

We'll be in KC for 3 or 4 more years, then we're moving to Colorado. We're talking 8-10,000 ft. at that time.

Here are some questions I now have:

1) How do I know what size jets are currently installed in the carb?
2) What size jets do I need for my current 1,000 ft.alt.?
3) What size jets will I need for 8,000+ ft.alt. in a couple of years?
4) When I change the jets, is it that simple...or do I need to reset the timing, idle speed, fuel/air mixture as well...every time?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

The Weber 32/36 is a good carb, good choice ;)

1) What jets do you want to identify?
The idle/progression jets or the main jets? Or both?
The idle jets are on the left and right side of the carb, behind a brass screw.
For the main jets you have to take the top off.
For the size of the jets, there are numbers stamped in the jets.

2&3) I had in mine for 55 in the primary and 65 in the secondary as idle jet, and 145 in both as main jets. Best way is to get a jet kit and try a little bit with the different sizes.
I tuned it with an Air/fuel gauge, which worked pretty fine.
I live at 2100 ft., so you would need probably need lower size of jets.
Best way would be to get the redline jet kitfor high altitude.
One important detail to know is there are two types of idle jets; one with bigger and one with a smaller diameter.

4) When you change the idle jets, you have to adjust the idle mixture everytime.
These jets are very easy to change from the outside of the carb, one screw each.
For the main jets you have to take the top off every time, but you don´t have to adjust the idle mixture.

Thanks Kai23. This gives me a good starting point. I plan to purchase the jet kit, and go from there. One more quick question...When you say "remove the top"...do you mean just the air filter including its bottom plate? Thanks again.

He is talking about the top of the carb. The jets are in the bottom of the bowls.

Thanks mtnwhlr! I didn't remember seeing any jet 'screws' under the air cleaner plate. I was afraid I missed something that should have been obvious.
