Thanks for the add. Putting my 1979 CJ5 back together... again. I have owned it since 1983 when it came to me with the AMC 232 i6 inline six and not enough power to pull the hat off your head with a running start. Squirrely on the road, underpowered, handled like a drunk water buffalo on roller skates, and God forbid a cross wind was blowing if you were on the pavement and moving faster than 40 MPH. Drove it 60 miles home in a stiff cross wind and was 100% going to put it up for sale as soon as I got it back because it was quite a handful on the road. Got it home, took it on the two-tracks around the house in Northern Michigan and here we are 40+ years later still together, LOL. I think the only original pieces left are the seat mounts, steering column and speedometer.

Handles better after fixing worn bushings all around, has WAY more power after I swapped in the AMC 360 as well. Been a long road, sometimes maddening, sometimes painful, but the vast majority of the time it has been more smiles per mile than anything else I have owned since getting my license in 79.

Thanks for the Add. New to Jeeps. Jumped in head first. 1980 CJ5 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l to 4.0 project from this rust bucket..... Started with a used 1976 frame. Still far from anything at the moment.

Thanks for the add! I recently picked up a 75 CJ5 for my wife's 30th birthday present. It's in decent shape but was a farm vehicle so it's got decades of temporary good-enough "fixes" that need addressed. I'm looking forward to all the knowledge and experience here!

Thanks for letting me join! My grandpa's 1956 CJ5 has been sitting in the corner of the shop for quite a few years and I think it's time to bring it back to life. I have a lot of work ahead of me!

Thanks for letting me join! I'll be spending the winter working on getting my 85 CJ7 back on the road. Looking forward to learning more from the group.

Hello and appreciate you letting me join. I've owned quite a few Jeeps, first car was a 78 CJ5 with a swapped V8 lifted with 35s. In hindsight it was a bit much for a 16 year old. My father passed a couple years back and I had forgotten that he had an '81 Scrambler, completely original. It has sat for 12 years and my brother and I are getting it back on the road. I'll post more details in the build section.

Nice, glad you're here and your part of a CJ family... :chug:

hello all. new here.

ok. to be fair, NOT a CJ. but kinda is, under the skin.

after 20-odd years I have an old Jeep again. and again, it's a Commando. (what can I say, I like strange :dung:)

local truck from Canada's only desert so fairly rust-free. rare-ish half-cab version. 258ci and floor three speed. sitting for a couple of decades.

so far I've got it running, and cleaned it up. needs lots. clutch cable, front brakes, etc. BUT, I drove it around the block!

the goal is the go through the mechanicals but not touch the body.
