Welding on a Warn 8274?

I am restoring an 8274 for my CJ7 . I have seen people put an oil drain plug in the bottom of the casting and I would like to do the same.

So I ordered a few aluminum bungs and plugs. I took it to a welder because I’m not set up to weld aluminum. He wasn’t sure of the exact metal and he is apprehensive about welding it because he isn’t sure of the composition of the metal. He is worried the case will crack because it’s not pure aluminum.

I know I’ve seen people weld plugs in, and I haven’t seen or read any horror stories. Is there anything I should be worried about or should I go full steam ahead??

Have you considered drilling and tapping a drain hole? Use a fine thread tap like a 7/16-20 at the lowest part of the housing. It is a cast housing so don't overtighten the bolt. You could even use a safety wire to make sure it won't loosen.

Very easy to siphon the oil out with a hose.
How I done mine for the last 41yrs.
I use Dextron/Mercon ATF fluid.
The case is thin, and hard for a plug to get a good seal just drilling and tapping.

I think the wall is too thin to just drop and tap. That’s why I bought an aluminum bung to weld onto the case. It will give the plug plenty of purchase to make a good seal.
