I want to get some new tires but not break the bank as everyone else in the world does. I only get to wheel on the weekends and I'm not sure what tire to go with. Now that its getting warm I'll be driving on the roads far more often so I'm not sure if MTs are the way to go. Any advice? I'm looking for something with a mid level performance but lasts above average on the road. Maybe like some really sticky ATs or a harder compound MT. Just looking for advice.

First off, WELCOME! As for the tires, any MT or mud terrain type of tire is going to cost more that any other tire will. If you dont wheel very often, or don't get into bad places like deep mud, you may want to look at an AT or all terrain tire. It will have better manners on the road, be far quieter, less expensive, have better manners on pavement, especially in the rain, and give better mileage both fuel and tire wear.

I have been looking into Cooper tires and they seem to be the best bang for the buck. I was just wondering if anybody had some personal experience with good tires. I have 265x75r16 Bridgestone Dueler APT or something like that. Its their most aggressive AT. I just want to get some 15s and some 33x12.5 to go with them.

Your profile says you have a stock 82. I take it that means a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , no lift
and 2.73 gears.
The 33's will hit the fenders without a lift, and the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l will have no balls with the 2.73 gears.
Other than that, tires are somewhat of a personal and regional thing as to what works best.

Ok, thanks. It has a 2 inch lift I forgot to mention so the tires won't rub. How much would putting bigger cogs in the diff cost?

Off the top of my head, 250-300 for the gears and bearing kit. If you have them installed most shops charge 300-500 labor. Thats per axle, so maybe $1500 for both ends.

Dang that's not cheap! Could I install this on a weekend in the garage with the right tools and the right help? There is a place on post called auto skills where you can rent a bay with a lift for 8 bucks an hour and use all the tools you need and they employ trained professionals to help you out. What gearing should I go with? I'm not looking to do any rock crawling so should like 3.07 be low enough? I still want to be able to drive on the highway.

I think something like 3.55 or 3.73 would be better.
If they have all the right tools and personal to help it's doable in a weekend. I would make sure there is someone that knows how to set up gears there. It's not normal maintance.

Well, it looks like I have a new project on my hands. I knew it wouldn't be long, there is always work to do on a CJ. Should I look into some lockers while I'm at it or would they even be necessary? I mainly wheel it on the trails. Sorry for all the dumb questions. I'm pretty new at this and I've only been wheeling in my jeep 3 or 4 times so I'm pretty inexperienced as well.

If you don't play in the rocks or deep mud you really don't need lockers.

I had a set of <-BAD WORD-> Cepek FCIIs and they were a great AT tire, had good traction on and off road, and got great mileage out of those tires, wore like iron

I've heard good things about them except for the price hahaha, but they have really good lugs and side-biters. I've heard they self clean pretty well.

33x10.5x15 BAJA/ATs Peirless tire has them $125. a tire and dont break the bank
They ride nice and wear good and do good on the rocks and in mud and also snow

very nice tire for the price

The best tire I've run in muddy clay, dirt, sand, snow, ice, rain, and dry pavement,
is the BFG KM2 33".
Hands down love these tires.

If you decide to change the ratio in your diffs make sure you have someone how knows how to set the lash. You run the risk of destroying the differentials if they are not set up correctly.

BFG are the best tire I've found. They're good wherever you go, and seem to last forever. I bought a set for my old '86 and I know I had them on there for 5 years. I drove that Jeep to several parts of the country, several times. When I sold the Jeep, they still had half tread. Also, that CJ was my daily driver back then. That's what I have on my 1985 now.

I think I'll go with the cooper ST's or the BFG KM2's, they seem to be the best bang for the buck. I'm going to do a lot of research into gears before I change the ones in my diffs. Thanks everyone for the help.

I have used Coopers on my trucks for years, had them on our Grand Cherokee, and love them. I would buy a Cooper ST in a minute.
