I am looking for a fuel gage for a 78 CJ7 . the gage is mounted in to the speedometer. Is there a site that has these or do I need to go junkyard diving to find one?

Thanks,
Jeff

Man that was quick, I had heard about that site but had not checked it out yet. Thanks alot for the info. 1 question,,will this simply come out by removing a couple of nuts from the back or do I have to remove the entire spedometer to replace the gage??

That i do not know im one of the more less experienced jeepers and im not totally sure i think you could just buy the whole cluster or seperately but you might have to take it out and look at it.

You'll need to pull the cluster, but It's not too bad to do.

Are you sure its the gauge itself? Many Cjs have inoperable fuel gauges but usually the gauge itself isnt the problem.

excelant point, sending units go a lot more often than gauges.

You just have not lived untill you have dropped the tank on a
cj.

Well, lets just say that I was under the dash and connecting wires when I got it to work and then a bare wire hit one of the terminals and a small stream of smoke came out of the gage. Not sure but I think that means toast is done. LOL

If your wiring back there is a hack job you might also look into getting a painless wiring kit, they are pricey but they are NICE, even though my wiring is fine i plan on getting one myself, and my fuel guage works but i think its wrong, so i plan on getting a new tank and sending unit and see if it keeps the fuel on a consistent level. Ive had my jeep die on me saying there was 3/4 of a tank and i shook the rear end and listened and it was empty or close to.

Lol. Ok , just didnt want to see you buy something that wouldnt fix the problem. Try to refrain from making toast under the dash. :D

If you cant find a fuel gauge for a decent price i have my old one that i wouldn't mind getting rid of, I have all the original gauges. Another input on the painless kit is that it is worth while to get the one with the connectors already on it. I really wish i got that one...

The secret with electrical devices is to keep the smoke on the inside. Once the smoke escapes, bad things usually happen.

It voids the warranty.

Well I got new gages and they are working. Temp gage is great adn the feul gage is on E when I have a full tank LMAO, I just told my buddy I go from Extreme to F()(&ed. I also found that my tank is leaking. I think that when the guy put the back seat in he punctured it, its leaking from teh top. Anyone know if the poly tanks are worth getting or should I just stick with metal?

I just put a polly tank in my CJ5 .
This one seems to go empty all the time also. Have to keep filling it up all the time. :)

Seriously. It's only been two weeks, Seems OK so far but i haven't banged it around yet.

I had to replace the tank in my '08 JK and 76 CJ in one week. Bad week for jeeps.
