Vehicle(s)
s10 4 door 4wd ,cj5 parts jeep
I've been looking hard to find a project vehicle for a while now, finding workspace was a pain but now I have a very nice lighted two car garage at my beck and call. However in the time of looking for a spot I passed on about 5 good project jeeps. So now I stumble across this 1980 Jeep Cj7 Lifted and Locked
I won't be able to see the vehicle till next week but I have 2 Ideas of what I might be getting into
1. The guy knows that what his idea of a good jeep won't bring what he's got into it on the market.
Or
2. I might be getting into a can of worms that I don't want to deal with. I.E. things done incorrectly ETC .
I've done my share of wrenching on things that were done wrong badly that making it worse than starting from scratch. So I would like you guys first impression (Because 1st instincts are usually correct) with the info you have would you think you were looking at a fair deal or would you shy away?

Sounds good but here's my first impression: first off he says it's not street legal and recommends keeping it for off road only. I would ask what all needs to be done to get it legal.
Secondly he says it has a 5 speed. Normally that's good but since this is an '80 CJ it must have a T-5 tranny. That's a light duty Transmission and it might not be long before it needs to be replaced.
Those are not bad points so for the price it's a jeep worth checking out.
Oh, one last thing: how many miles are on this CJ?

Mileage I don't know Busa, Have only contacted the guy by email and first of the week is deer season and he is going hunting. With what you brought up about the tranny that and the street legality of the jeep are a non issue. My budget allows me that freedom plus my build plan has a good guideline of what I want for example If I werwe to buy from this guy the body lift,35s and front locker are ghost.I'm sure I can recoup some on the locker and 35s.

I would say it is worth looking at. It is running, and looks to no have been abused too badly. I would also say that mileage may not mean that much, as it was a trail vehicle only. If there were a way to measure the hours, that would be a better indicator for how much use the engine has seen. Getting under and seeing how much mud and other things are stuck in the frame, skidplate, and any other crevices would also be good.

If you are building more of a street jeep, I would look for that to start with instead of an offroaded jeep if it were me.

old dog I'm also taking that into consideration the only reason I considered looking was it has the one piece and lockers with the r and p so that would save me some work. Have not had any responses to the adds I've replyed to Can't understand this one (you have a cash buyer so why not reply one way or t other you wanna sell r not) go figure

What is that paint hiding? Rust? That can get nasty.

What kind of lockers? Receipts available?

Who set up the gears? They are not just a bolt in for a rookie job.

Why the different tires. Generally not a good plan.

Sounds kinda flaky

Maybe it had the snot wheeler out of it?

Do you buy lotto tickets?

Do you buy lotto tickets?

Well as for the other ?s that will wait till I get a chance to meet with the guy Only had time for a brief conversation w/him but it gave me a chance to feel him out and on the whole he seems pretty up front time will tell. As for what the paint is hiding last I heard fiberglass was pretty unlikely to rust also plan on taking a buddy who has done a bit with jeeps in the past so as to get a different perspective and possibly point out things I may overlook. As for the lotto tix on occasion I buy them.can't win with no ticket.:D But thanks for pointing out some of the things you did.

Well went and looked this morning , it was a no go guy started it w ether Granted it was chilly about 29* it idled for 2 3 mins while I checked a few things no leaks etc but bent front driveshaft 2 bird nests on the motor basically for the overall condition it was in I told him I'd give him 2500 for it. Well back to the search.
