The VIN number and the paint color codes were easy to break. The real challenge for me so far has been decoding the rest of the numbers on the firewall plate. Does anyone know what the other codes stand for?

Do a search it's on here somewere just can't remember, in a sticky? in the Docs? it's also in your shop manual..you do have a shop manual right?

Found it in my Chiltons manual of all places.

here's the example in the book for a 1975-80;

J8A15NN000001

J_______Built by Jeep Corp.
8_______1978 Model
A_______Transmission (A for Auto, F for 3 speed, M for 4 speed)
15______Model (93 is for CJ7 , 83 for CJ5 )
N_______Gross Vehicle Weight (A 3750, E 4150, N 6200, P 6800, S 7600, Y 8400)
N_______Engine (A AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 1bbl, C AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 2bbl, E AMC 232 i6 1bbl, H AMC 304 2bbl, N 360 2bbl, P 360 2bbl, Z 401 4 bbl)
000001__sequential serial number

Thanks folks, but perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my original post. I've already figured out my 13 digit VIN number and it confirmed I have a 1979 Jeep CJ7 AMC 304 V8 4 speed that weighs 3750 lbs. It's the "other" numbers stamped on the plate that I can't figure out. I did find the paint color code 9A, but the rest are ??? Unfortunately they aren't in my shop manual either.

From my 78 FSM; This is the plate on driver side firewall not the sticker inside if still there.

Sales order # SSR &O #
factory use# Paint # Trim option #
VIN # Jeep model #

SSR & O is for special orders- my plate is blank there.
factory use it says "disregard"- mine has 22 there

Did you ever find what you were looking for? I am always gathering data on trim codes so I would be curious as to what your plate says. Not interested in VIN line but the two above it. Thanks.

No, I haven't had any more luck breaking the remaining codes, but to answer your question J103261, 24, 9A, 9300, and 6CK are the "other" numbers on the firewall plate. Sasquach (below) was able to identify what the codes represent, but I don't have a legend that breaks them down beyond that. I'd really like to figure out what the trim package and interior is/was for mine.

I drive what you do. A 79 CJ7 Golden Eagle with a T-18 and a swapped in 401 that is now MFI. It originally had a AMC 304 and a T-150 . Attached is a code sheet for the 79. Your seats originally were tan denim vinyl buckets.

Ignore the T-9 and just look at the last 3 numbers.

Hope that helps

By the way if you want to see the original color of yours go to my pictures as mine has been restored to the 9A Alpaca Brown with the eagle on it.

Many thanks Don. That was a big help and from what I can tell by yours, I'll definitely go back to the original color. Your 7 looks great!

I just bought an all original, untouched 79' Renegade and was looking to figure out what each set of numbers are on the data plate / cowl tag.
J115465. 10-5b
B 9k 6ck
J9f93ec80xxxx 9300

My plan is to get some estimate for a good body shop to restore the minor rust and paint match it to factory spec then do the rest of the work myself. The Renegade is 99% all there. I need to find a reliable source for factory original parts since this second Jeep is going to be restored like it rolled off the factory line.

Aside from the easy breakdown of Jeep serial numbers, the only other numbers on the tag of any value to the owner are 9K which is the paint color - Sable Brown Metallic and 6CK which is the seat color and style - Brown Vinyl Buckets. I'm told the rest of the numbers pertain to the purchase order and job number from which the Jeep was made.

Here's how the firewall tag breaks out (It took a long time for me to find all the answers...I'll use my firewall tag as an example):

J183741 - Sales Order Number

24 - Number used by the factory only and can not be broken out.

9A - Paint code - Alpaca Brown Metallic in this case (999 indicates special paint code option)

6CK - Interior Trim Code - Tan Levi (Edition) 's denim, vinyl bucket seats in this case (999 indicates special interior trim option) 1st number is color, 1st letter is type of seats, 2nd letter is material

J9F93EH093384 - VIN, broken out as follows:
J - Jeep Corporation
9- Year - 1979
F- Plant & Transmssion - Toledo,T-150 3-spd Manual Transmission
93 - Series (model) – CJ7
E - GVW - 3750lbs, models 83, 84, 93
A - Engine - 258cid I-6 1bbl carburetor
152117 - Sequential Serial Number

8300 - Model of the vehicle - CJ5 in this case
(9300 is a CJ7 )

Some firewall tags have another letter/number combo on the same line as the Sales Order Number; it's a Special Sales & Order (SSR&O) Number, built to special order other than standard parts and equipment. The number was maintained by the factory and assisted the dealer in ordering the correct parts for the vehicle. If the Paint and/or Trim codes were "999", there would be a SSR&O number on the firewall tag.

Yeah the paint and seats were the easy ones to find but if the other numbers are for factory use, im curious if they were used to identify the type of jeep ie: Golden Eagle , Renegade , Laredo etc. I am suprised that there are no identifications for the trim package like on GM's but as these two are my first jeeps i guess theres always something new out there to throw a wrench in things.

Yeah it is always tough for trim and there is nothing that I have been able to locate that shows trim detail. Numbers on order line look like something was special ordered but no clue as to what that might be.

Photos of Renegade look all original except seats. My original denim seats had metal jean style buttons on them . Also your jeep looks early production as older 79's have full rollbar to floor like the 80's and up.

Good luck.

That would be correct. The seats are the low back style denim with the small metal buttons. She did buy it in 1978 so yes it is an early 79'. The other thing is the data plate is actually on the core support not the fire wall like my other 79' which is a later model.

I posted up some pics of what I'm describing

Yeah that's the good seat the other not so good but salvageable. The cowl / data plate threw me off since it wasn't mounted in the typical spot. But I checked the firewall it wasnt moved.
