As has been repeated many times in this thread high octane gas doesn't produce more power but it can prevent detonation in a high compression / high performance engine. The lie that high octane gas produces more power is often propagated by the gas companies. I remember a commercial for Exxon Gas that showed two cars driving until one ran out of gas. The claim was that their high octane gas got better mileage. Yes, maybe they did make a test that showed their gas got 0.1% better gas mileage than some cheep convenience station gas.
I laugh when I see a Prius fill up on high octane gas. If I was any more of a smart <-BAD WORD-> I would ask "is that radical cam and 12 to 1 compression causing detonation and pings in your Prius?"

many things such as this become urban legend, that is, they are believed by so many people to be correct, they become truth through common knowledge. Even though they are totally incorrect.

when they started using it for advertising purposes, it meant, not close, so we had a claim that it was virtually the only product you will ever need, meaning it was not even the only product, and legal to say, however the public embraced it to mean the only so the meaning has been changed in modern dictionaries to almost wholly, or just about.
So you can see the power of a entire population believing something is.
Octane will never mean more power, but the public believes it so strongly that you could argue it to someone and teach him the truth, but tomorrow when he goes to work his coworker is going to laugh and say you are an idiot, everybody know octane is how powerful it is.
