Ok - I'm feeling a little stupid and I need someone to go ahead and push me over the edge. In the process of cleaning up the steering column and assorted brackets, and I have all cleaned up, painted, and ready to go, and I cannot remember for the life of me where it goes. Thought it was a steering column bracket, but now I'm not sure.

What the heck is this???

Thanky

I'll take a look at my cj today and see if I can figure it out. Hopefully someone here just knows!

I’d hate to think it’s some strange part I don’t need

I haven't stripped mine down like you :) don't remember anything like that. Could be FOD but someone should know

I think that could be part of the steering colume brace that goes behind the dash panel.
Is that a crack I see on the top, right side?

I've got the driver seat out right now so I crawled up under there-it's hell getting old- an sure could not see anything like that. Big heavy duty brace under there, but don't see that. Sure would have been nice if AMC could have put some type of metal coating on those bare metal parts:(

I have what I thought were the upper braces

Just not sure of the extra one. And yep - Lumpy is correct - it is cracked. Once o figure out where it goes I’ll weld that back up. It was in with the other steering stuff - that’s what I get for taking so long to put this thing back together......

Thread 'drift' here-:chug:
Make sure to smooth the sharp edges of the steering colume brace where the wiring loom rides on it.
Infact-Slip the loom inside a hose to protect it. That plastic corrugated stuff the wire-loom is wrapped with gets brittle with age.
I have seen many electrical issues from the brace's sharp edges cutting through the insulation and creating direct 'shorts' that are a major PITA to trace down.
Shum8-That is what the braces look like in my '85.

Here's a big SWAG-Could that be a seat bracelet?? :wtf:

Too short for the seat stuff. It was with the rest of the steering pieces (except the two piece firewall brackets [emoji35]) so I cleaned it up and painted it like I knew what it was. Whatever it is, other than the crack it’s a damned nice one......

WELL DONE!

My first thought was WTF did that come from..... but I remember the steering column that came in the Jeep was an auto...... must have been a leftover part from that. I can now state with complete confidence it is impossible to get the holes in that part to match ANYTHING in the tub. I’ve stuck that stupid bracket everywhere I could think of..... now I’m just sitting here laughing at myself..... HAHAHAHAHAHA

Ebay that sucker, worth a little money to someone😀

Hmmm. I have an auto tranny on the floor of my garage waiting to go in. I have the rubber mount. I wonder if I have that part too.

If you need one let me know - I’ll weld this on up. Pretty sure I don’t need it now

No wonder I couldn't find or have never seen one on mine! Standard Transmission here. Glad it was figured out fairly shortly

This explains why I have no brackets like this either! My cj had an auto, but the mounts are looong gone.
Shum8, what did you do to cut the tunnel for the shifter?

When I swapped to the T19 I just used a hole-saw for the new shifter location. The T19 is larger than the OEM hole for the T-5 , so I welded up the knockout to cover up the original hole
