Ok be nice here Im a newbie
i just bought a 1978 CJ5 from a guy who owned it since new
he took the original engine out and replaced it with a 1986 motor and said its a ford
it is a straight 6 and the date stamp on the side says 013- 86 but other than that i have no idea what it is
how can i tell what it is?
Thanks for any help

Post some pictures- that may help with the ID.

If it's a ford motor. I would guess a 300 straight 6.

If true, I'd love to know what Transmission and Transfer Case you have. I've never thought of a 300 as a swap option, but those are some stout motors.

i was told it might be a 300 too but just not sure
he did say it bolted right in with no modifications
would the 300 not do that?

If it's ford and a straight 6 then it's a 300. Only straight 6 they made. And iirc the 300 shared tranny patterns with the 5.0, so mating it to a T-5 shouldn't have been too difficult

It's either a Ford 240 or the much more common 300.
Both of these engines used the same engine block but the 300 had a longer stroke.

i was looking at another thread on all the different jeeps and motors over the years and saw one that looked very similar to mine but now i cant find the thread:eek:

I have a feeling you have a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l from an 86 Cj. If we could see some pics that would help for sure.

Definitely a jeep motor. Ford i6 intake and exhaust is on the other side of the motor

That's as far as my identification help goes. Someone else with more knowledge of jeep motors can help ID exactly which one it is.

thanks
i had seen that too
here is the one i was speaking of
http://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f102/cj5-1976-1983-a-12124/
the AMC 232 i6 6 cyl here looks alot like mine one the left or passenger side

The AMC 232 i6 and AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l were the same casting, and externally look the same. A AMC 232 i6 is is a destroked 285.

On the passenger side around the 2nd & 3rd spark plug hole will be a small flat pad on the block. Stamped into that is a code that identifies the motor and year. Here's the one from my CJ that identifies it as a 1977 AMC 232 i6 .

That brings me to another question on that engine. It should have a two barrel intake manifold on it but only has a single barrel. :( Was there a carb with it or did you buy it like it sits?
Thanks for your help guys now I need a good used carb for cheap

bought it like it sits except all the tires were flat and dry rotted
a buddie is letting me borrow his till i find one

I dont think you want to keep the single barrel carb on it. How close are you to Natural Bridge? I think I have a 2 barrel one downstairs you can have for $0. :)
