The axle width from the 78 Bronco is 65" wms to wms. Thats not too wide? I am confused!
I really dont think 65" wms to wms is that bad. There were a lot of different applications for the Ford 9" between cars, trucks, and SUV's....I've seen everthing from 58" to 70" wms to wms.

so if I put the 65" ford rear outback, what must I do with the front rear that is significantly narrower? By the way, thanks for your input everyone!

That's why I asked what your plans were for the front axle....you will definately be wider.
I would find something to replace the front 30 with. Possibly a Dana 44 from a Waggy.

I'm sure if you look around a little bit you can find a 9" from the early shoe-box broncos (66-72). They will bolt in without moving the perches. And I'm sure you could pick one up sans the 3rd member for a couple bucks.

The 9" from a 75(I'm pretty sure that was the year) bronco had the big bearings which is more desirable. I forget the measurement from wms-wms on the shoe-box rears but it is fairly close to the factory Jeep wide-trac measurements.

I had 36's mounted on 15"x10" wheels that had 3 3/4" backspacing with stock CJ flares with that 9" and the tires stuck out approx 3".

IIRC a cherokee chief or j10 is 65 1/2 inches wide.

71-77 Bronco's were 58" wms to wms. 78 model year jumped up in size considerably to 65" wms to wms and no longer used a big bearing 9.
