Hi all,

Been tearing down an 81CJ7 and have the tub off. The plan is to replace the rear shocks, remove the springs, and give them a thorough once-over so they stop squeaking. Probably same with the front. I'm also going to replace the brakes all around. This will be primarily a streeter but I'll be doing some light off-roading.

What else do you guys recommend I do while the tub is off that I might regret not doing later? Not trying to break the bank but if there's anything that is worth my time to knock out while the tub's off it'd be greatly appreciated.

Rear U-joints were replaced a few years ago, so maybe replace the fronts? Ball joints? Help me out CJ vets!

If your fuel gauge wasnt working take a look at the wiring to the sending unit. Also pull the sending unit and check the little "sock" filter on it. Look for any rust and get rid of it. Clean and paint. :) Ball joints is a good idea if their bad. Any wear item that you can acsess easier now is the time

Yep, any fuel tank, Transfer Case , or tranny work is easiest now. Check your brake lines for rust too. Any frame cleaning or painting needed, now's the time.

Definately brake and fuel lines . Any top engine work would also be easier at this time

I plan on taking my tub off this winter, and doing everything I can, so I know my jeep, and every nut and bolt, replace and paint everything that needs done, so I don't have to worry or wonder.

Thanks for the recs. The PO had a new fuel tank so I'm already planning on hooking that up. I'll check the brake / gas lines as well. I'm going to do the rear first so it looks like:

New fuel tank
Brakes
Shocks
Clean up leaf springs
Examine the brake / gas lines

Will post pics with my build thread!

I pressure washed my frame about 5 times. I just kept washing dirt out. I painted my motor when I had my tub off.

Do a thorough crack inspection and look hard at the back half for rust. Tap the frame lightly with a ball peen hammer to see if any sections start to cave in from internal rust. Nows the time to fix it.

Also include the parking brake cables. I would focus in on the frame repaint and finish.

Tub off?????

Oh man now it is time to fix everything
