the 300 will require an adapter to fit the Jeep T-18 which I will assume is a close ratio T-18 . the 300 will require an adapter to fit on the Ford T-18 which I will assume is the wide ratio T-18 . I say the 300 because it has a lower 4L than the Dana 20 which would make it a good choice. Just to confuse things Teraflex sells a gear set for the Dana 20 to lower the 4L well below the Dana 300 stock.
The whole thing boils down to how much money you want to throw at it, doesn't it always?? I don't think there is a wrong move with the options you have chosen.
IMO:D

I have a jeep T-18 mated to a Dana 20 ,I also have a Dana 300 that im thinking about installing a ford T-18 to. Im trying to decide what Transfer Case would be better.

It looks like you already have the low gears in your 20,
can't you just change the input shaft and run the ford T-18
and have a great crawl ratio in first.

The Dana 20 i have already has a tera low kit installed. I am aware of the adapter for the ford T-18 to the Dana 300 they are costly. I guess i should have included my info (Already have the ford T-18 ) Im trying to decide what Transfer Case is stronger. Ive seen the tail end of a Dana 300 pop off.

Both transfer cases are very strong.
I've had both setups (a Ford T-18 that I've adapted to a Dana 300 and now a Jeep T-18 on a Dana 20 with Terra Low Gears.

The Dana 300 is desirable only because it has a lower low from the factory. Since your Dana 20 has the Terra Low go with that combination. No adapters nessisary. Easy, cheep and lower gearing.
:D

I believe that the earlier D300s had a history of a weaker tailshaft that was shorter than the later ones. Someone out there does make a heavy duty Dana 300 tailshaft kit, maybe Advance Adapters. Anyway with a V8 you will be putting an extreme amount of torque out. This can be calculated by multiplying your engine torque by your low gear ratio(6.32x3xengine torque) any way you will probably come to a number that you should have about 3" diameter axles safely get by so go easy on the right foot.

If you already have the low gears I would go with the Dana 20 , it is a great case and very short

IIRC that was a 1980-only deal? The strength difference between a Dana 300 & Dana 20 is not an issue especially when you would need to spend hundreds of $$$'s on an adapter to get what many would consider the less desirable Dana 300 stock gear ratio of 2.62:1 vs your converted 3.15:1 Dana 20 . Depending on tire size your Dana 20 will have a crawl ratio around 75:1 while a Dana 300 would be about 62:1 using the a T18a/Dana 20 w/3.13 conversion assuming 3.73 gears on 33's as examples.

Something else to consider: Is your Ford a T-18 with a 6.32 first gear to equal your jeep T18A as some Ford T-18 's only had a 4.32 first gear?

I’m not sure how much if any difference there is in length between the Ford V8 you have and the AMC motor that came out but if the back of the bell housing sits in the same spot as stock then a T-18 with a Dana 300 adaptor and case will not work in your 1974 CJ5 as the rear driveline will be too short. Stick with the Dana 20 .

This will be going in my CJ7 not in my 74 CJ5 . I will be getting rid of my 74 to fund my build on my CJ7 :(

Hi guys..I have a 74 CJ5 ....AMC 304 ,T-15 and a Dana 20 ...30 in ft and a 44 in rear.... have had it for a long long time , like 30 yrs. my question is , im building it for sand use only now and I have a 360 with a 727 and a 208 tc out of a 90' wag for parts. if i use the 360 ,727 Transmission will this Transmission / 300 tc. be too long in the 5 ? cause the 208 ft drive shaft is on the wrong side for the 30 ft diff so will the 300 tc bolt up in place of the 208 tc?? if i use the 20 tc i will need an adapter ,{ more length} rear driveshaft lenght is not too big of a issue as its for sand drag's and dunning only. The T-15 is ok but an automatic would be better in the dunes.

You can get 4 to 1 Tera Low for the Dana 300 . Theres also a stronger output available as well. Depends on if you think the money you'll spend is worth going from 3.15 to 4.
