I have a frame off restoration going on. 1973 CJ5 . I am looking for input on how to build it back up. I will not be building a rock crawler just a nice jeep that might see a trail and camping during the summer. it has a brand new rebuild AMC 304 so I would like to keep that. I'm sure I can tweek some more HP out of it. I have done research into the YJ suspension swap and that looks pretty promising so I will go that way.

main question is which tranny and transfer should I put behind the AMC 304 ? should I go automatic, 4 speed, 5 speed? which ones will bolt up to the AMC 304 ? I have the old 3 speed and transfer but would like to update the CJ.
any thoughts and direction? thanks all

YJ springs are wonderful. They are not sprung (lower spring rate) so hard. Spring plates, spring hangers and shackles

Not sure why you want to redo the tranny/ tcase. I prefer the forward to reverse pattern of a three speed when stuck.

:D

Me, either. After driving a 5-speed for the last several years, and 4-speeds for lotsa years before that, I'm looking forward to driving a 3-speed again.

As your CJ is a 1973 I would make sure the frame is true then box it in for strength as the U channel is prone to cracking. Don’t do too much lift, 2-1/2” max. Behind the AMC 304 I’d put a T-18 as it was a factory option and will be as close to a direct bolt in as you can get; used parts are readily available plus it will give you the ability to do some low gear wheeling if you want. Also your existing Transfer Case will bolt up too. Forget the autos as in a CJ5 they will make the rear drive shaft too short. I know it is physically possible to stuff one in but as I’ve said before “just because you can doesn’t mean you should”.

The bottom line to me would be to keep the Jeep, Jeep and just make it as much of a cherry head turner as you can. :us:

I agree with saddle tramp. Sort of a resto-rod build. MAybe some white spoke wheels and metallic paint.
