I work in a place that has all the tools you could dream of, ironworkers shears, brake, welders of all types. If you could what would you fab for your jeep if you were me? I am looking for ideas to fab up on lunch and spare time.

Oh where to start....
Bumpers, tire carrier, sliders, skid plates, steering brace, tube fenders, tube doors.....

All good items but something along the lines of not being made by a company yet or hard to come by item is what I am looking at or a real money saver.

what do you need?

if you want to save money the just fabing for fabing sake is not very cost savings, you will be making something just because.
I mean, WTF
If you want to save money you fab what you need, not just some arbitrary item just because you can.

Go ahead and fab a front winch bumper with the plate and a receiver hitch, that should save you about 400 dollars, don't need one? oh well you still saved 400 dollars

Point taken. I was considering a two peace tranny mount skid plate. Do I need not really, but would it be nice for future work on u joints etc yes. My problem is at this point I do not know what really is needed and what is for show.

skids
you need to protect stuff
tranny
oil pan
diff covers
tcase
gas tank

bumpers
need to be made so they have function
with
receivers
tire carriers
winch mounts
recovery points
places ro mount supports for tire carriers

LOL! Yea driver007, you walked right into that one.

A fairly simple item to to do is your u bolt plates with a heavier guage. I don't think it's a common problem but I cut some new one's out of 3/8' as the don't sell aftermarket heavy duty and I had cracked one.

Yes CJ007 I happen to have a couple of hundred feet of 3/8 by 5 and 3/8 by 6 punch a couple of holes and in buisness. I might start with a front bumper add on. I was considering a roll bar style, but bolting it on instead of welding. For ease of repair after hitting deer trees etc

I used to be in that same situation. I worked in the fabrication flight while in the Air Force. I miss the cnc mill and lathe. It's an easy question for me to answer. Make more tools! I have a small sheetmetal break, I made a bender similar to a hossfeld for bending stuff like round bar. I made a disc sander with an old scrap motor. A brass hammer is always handy. A slide hammer/puller. I still have and use the chisel I made in tech school back in 1980. Brass punches, pry bars, weldments. I could go on and on.

I made a u joint press, here's a picture of my sheet metal break. Another picture of a puller I made. One of these days you won't have axcess to all those neat tools.

Bumpers with good clevis mounts going to the frame is always a good start, but if you never take to a place to get stuck, then why?

Build what you need based on what you do with you do with your Jeep.

Show, street or offroad.

Put a long term plan together and start off on the journey. . .

Id fab every thing I could.. I really like the idea of making other fab tools. yes you can probably save a little money and a ton of time by buying premade parts but I would be alot more proud of my jeep if when some one asked who made ?????? part and I could reply "I did"

What I'd like to see is some more skid plates from the steering box to the Transfer Case skid plate I'm sure there out there but all u see is wrangler and up skid plates. The best 4x4 I had was a 1986 Toyota pickup I put 32/12.5 on it and it would go any where and it had a full skid plate from the front bumper to the end of the Transfer Case from the factory. Oh and I still have that old pickup sitting behind my barn. Allot of good mudding memories in that truck. until I got my jeep my boys always say when we go up a big hill or deep hole of mud they always say our jeepy can go anywhere:D. These are the best memories now.:)
