What year did gas tank move

What year did gas tank move
Did you guys notice that the pic you are discussing is from, and is labeled as, a 1955 CJ picture? Not saying that is what they are, just the title of the page and pic.

Edit: I found the same pic listed as a '71 reference...about 3/4 the way down...
The Jeep® 462, Renegade I and Renegade II Package « Earlycj5.com

and according to this page The Early CJ-5 and CJ-6 Spotters’ Guide « Earlycj5.com the fuel tank was moved in '72, as noted on this thread a few times. :)

mylittlecj5,
I copied those pictures to my computer without renaming them. I don't know who nmed the them 1955.

I'm in the process (middle) of a 68 CJ5 project. It has the tank under the seat, of course. In this project I'm going to use a later model frame because it has a disk brake and power sterring set up all ready on it, Here's the question; has anyone ever put the rear tank and also left the tank under the seat? Really looking at it from the volume aspect. Should give about 25/26 gal quanty, which would be nice. The CJ5 has the Dant. v-6, T-14 /T-18 & 4.10 gears. I would really like to put the Overdrive on it, but $ will probably prevent that from happening to begine with. What do you all think about the 2 tank idea? thanks, tw

sure
more times than you can count
and visa versa as underseat tanks are readily available

If capacity is the issue, why not just go with a poly over-sized tank?

2 tanks adds a valve and extra gauge.

I'm not a fan of the tank under the seat. Some year I will quit smoking. . . .:)

Adding a 2nd tank is a great idea.
Going from a 15 gallon tank to a 21 gallon tank only gains you 6 gallons but it's easy. If you add a 2nd tank then you have to worry about making the 2nd tank filler look OEM. If you have an early CJ5 its easy to make the rear filler look OEM. The filler can just end at the rear quarter panel. If you add a tank under the seat it's not so easy because of the way the factory filled in where the filler used to be.
I plan on increasing my gas capacity and I will just install a 21 gallon tank. It's the easy way. Adding an under the seat tank to a late model CJ5 isn't worth it if you ask me.

Well its your jeep.....if you like the two tank idea do it.Its actually pretty easy..You could run a rear oversize poly tank and an underseat tank .The rear oversize tank hangs down quite a bit but if you have a lift and tall tires is ok.On cj5s up thru 1975 the underseat tank fits right under the seat, you cut a hole for the filler gasket in the quarter panel right where it went thru most of 1970 ,you can mount a fuel gauge to a bracket off the seat frame to moniter the underseat tank and use the dash one for the rear tank. You can run a simple transfer switch and a tee.If you want to get really creative there is a company that sells tanks to fit under the passenger seat too but that is a bit more work. Most of the early cj5s have a k frame piece and rear drawbar setup you would have to remove to run the rear tank but it isnt a huge deal and since you're using a later frame isnt an issue for you.Have fun

why?
just run both sender wires to a toggle switch and use the stock fuel gauge; throw the toggle, switch tank ending units.
works if you use a manual changeover valve, or even an electric changeover valve with a double throw toggle.
No point in making the install any harder than it is.

Well I don't see where either way is any harder....but your way would be cheaper and less prone to damage .....so i'll concede your idea is better!:)

hey do u have the tank switch in the back behind the seats...if so in what direction does the switch have to be on the seat tank and the back tank..thanks

That sounds custom. Jeep never installed both tanks with a switch to pick what tank you wanted to use.
