Wheel Spacers: how wide should I get them?

Wheel Spacers: how wide should I get them?
Funny thing is - it's just math... 1+1=3 or something like that... :)

The offset of a spacer or a wheel are the same when calculated from the datum (the hub)... Either way - the distance from the hub is the same... :)

yet he betrays you!

Yea I have been thinking about new wheels and I have never dealt with wheel spacers b4. When looking at my CJ from the front the tires dont stick out past the fenders. I would rather them stick out maybe an inch or outside the fenders...
Getting different wheels should probably do the trick you think? I am really just going for a wider wheel base appearance...

You have now been inducted into the happy club!!!

Well....we're never going to see eye to eye on this one, so let's agree to agree that you're wrong.:p

You've got to be careful with the wheels sticking out. I don't know about here in CT, or in TN where you live, but in PA it's illegal for any part of the tire tread to stick out further than anypart of the body, to include fender flares. (I have my vehicle inspection licence in PA, that's how I know)

Back when I had 33's on the XJ I had to put the bushwacker pocket flares on it to cover the tires. Just something you may want to check on first.

Yup, also a CT law, though they never inforce it.

They do in PA. The state boys love nothing more than enoforcing the "lift laws". If I remember correctly it's something like $100 per tire.

BTW--- You guys should check out the other THREAD that I just posted. I wanted to know if any of you have similar stories...

Iv'e had 2" spacers on the TJ for 4 years and have had no problems even when wheeling. now if I had my way I would go backspacing (on rims) but the wife loves her wheels and therefore spacers. This has been one of those age old arguements so Um.....go ahead and argue :D

Everyone will have their own story on spacers, just like everything else. But kidding aside, I have seen too many bearings spin a race due to what I believe to be axial loading on the outer bearing surface from the added offset. I'm not bright enough to guess why, but by the same token, have not seen a reasonably offset wheel cause the same problem. Now, some of these vehicles were simply abused, and the bearings were probably on their way out anyway, but the averages were too high for me to ignore overall. Like anything else, some people can and will run them forever with no problems. I would still never recommend the use of them. Here's my thoughts on stuff like this. Just like body lifts and lift shackles, wheel spacers are one of those things that were invented to be an inexpensive way to get around a problem. Usually big tires.

Why not just go out and get a set of WT axles cheap and swap.
80 did have NT right ?

I could well be wrong, but i think wide track axles came in on the 1982 year model. But I completely agree with the idea of just doing a cheap axle swap, and doing the job right.

:)

I made some drawings and some calculations this morning... (to prove my point)

BUT...

Lets just say we agree to disagree...

LMAO! If you weren't such a funny guy..

You missed my hidden message - didn't you... :)

No ...no I didn't. I chose to be the bigger man and not tell you where to store your numbers and drawings!
