I am planning to buy off road tires for my Jeep. Is there a general rule for wheel and tire width fitment.
For example, should the wheel be more narrow. or is common wheel and tire width preferred?
I have 15 inch diameter.

How tall/large of tire are you thinking? You likely have 7" wide rims if they are stock white spoke.

15x7 or 8, and 31x10.5 tire is a good pairing. I'm running 15x10 with 33x12.5 tires...

I've got 35x12.50s on my 15x11s. (I've heard that a good way to judge is keep the wheel width about the same as the tread width...)

I ran 8" wheels on my 35s and they worked just fine. I like to keep things on the narrow side for squeezing thru rocks and trees.

I personally don't like running anything wider then an 8" wide rim with a 12.5 tire.
The reason is it will hold the bead better under aired-down conditions. Add the fact that the rim is better protected from protruding rocks and limbs.
