When a Jeep passes you on the road.

When a Jeep passes you on the road.

I personally have always thought the CJ with the big round gauges was way cooler than the wrangler. Even when I had my 91 wrangler I really loved it but always coveted the CJ wishing I had one. Now Ive got one and the wrangler is long gone. No regrets, to me they handle just the same on the street. But back to the wave thing...When I lived in PA. I always got waves in the wrangler. In FL. I get almost none in the CJ. WTH? Maybe regional? FLorida doesnt have much culture on any front I suppose.

PA
the CJ will always be on a pedestal
and for good reason
but face it
technology goes on and the modern Wrangler can out wheel a CJ.

having said that, I will stick with my first generation CJ5s and CJ6s for years as I love them to death.

And like one of those 60s cigarette commercials I will have the black eye before I switch. But I do not deny the onslaught of technology.

Then why were so many "jeepers" upset in 83 & 86 when the CJ's were stopped being produced? Why did so many dislike the wrangler when it came out?

Like I said before I have 3 cj5s and love them, but the fact is cj sales were lagging badly and the YJ brought the much needed updates. CJers hated the square headlights and wider profile and the plastic dash. (Strange that wider axels and wheel spacers are a common mod to cjs) Other than that there aint much difference. When my 90 was produced they were still using AMC engines. The only thing I don't like about it is it was assembled in canada.:(
The TJ is a very different machine than the cj or the yj, but as a wheeler I think it's superior to either.
I absolutly hate the looks of the new JKs with their wide grill and plastic fenders, and I particularly hate the 4 door version, however they seem to be selling and keeping and keeping American workers employed.:)

go to Hrja dot com and check the extras section theres a whole topic on the Jeep wave

The jeep wave does seem to be dieing. I still wave to all of them but it's usually only the older or off-road jeeps that wave back.:(

Can't agree more! Just about everyone in a 4-door Jeep doesn't give 2-f*#%s
Have to say that even most ppl in a RUBICON don't wave either.

It's only the people who actually work on their own Jeeps that still give the wave.

with all the creature comforts the new one have there's to many people that buy them that are just buying a car not a jeep.
people use to buy a jeep to have a jeep not a car.

It used to bother me to not get a wave back. But honestly, i don't look nowadays to see if I get a return wave. I just wave to the Jeeps i see regardless.

I have noticed that the newer models that are built up generally return the waves. Maybe the JK crowd just doesn't know the wave thing. Maybe if they see me wave they will think about it and figure it out. If not, no biggie.

Guess I will finally weigh in on this topic. The Jeep wave (and the Harley wave).

Sometimes I wave, often not. With Chrysler HQ just up the road from me, I seriously see Hundreds of 'Jeeps' daily. Agree, the older or off-road modified Jeeps tend to wave. The soccer mom / status symbol drivers don't. Seems those who are serious about the sport have the bond that gets them to acknowledge one another when out cruising.

Same with the motorcycle wave. I ride a Harley cruiser (there is a rice rocket in the garage as well) and I wave at anyone who looks like they might actually be a rider. I don't base it on the bike. For me, being an instructor, if you are wearing shorts, flip-flops and a tank top, no wave at all. You are a squid. If you have your penny loafers and $5K in Harley clothes, you are probably a weekend warrior poser. Neither gets it anyway.

But either way, it doesn't really effect me if you wave or not. I am still extremely content in my vehicles of choice.

That link to the Jeep Wave rules was awesome.

After some number crunching, I found out that if I am in my 74 CJ5 and I see my BF in his 66 CJ5 , I have to initiate the wave, but if he is in his YJ, he has to initiate. Who knew :p.

Until I get my girl up and running, I have to be content to sigh and pout a little when I see everyone else enjoying their Jeeps. :(

Here's the "rules".The Jeep Wave

Hilarious! Now I'm gonna have to score my Jeep!

And for the record, I seem to get a lot of waves while driving my Jeep here in Iowa, but then Iowa's a friendly, wave and wave back kind of state :)

I think the wave is a dying past time like most things now days living in the country when driving around with my dad it was a "custom" to wave at the truck passing you as u probably knew him in some way or the other. I always grew up thinking it was the polite thing to do, when I am on a back road I get a wave from older drivers but not younger ones I find the same for the jeep I'll get a wave from older gentlemen driving thee old jeeps around but if I see a younger guy that doesnt look like he was raised by being told a wave is a way to be courteous and say hello to some one you know or might run into one day then I usually don't waste my time

I think its because the newer jeeps are barely even jeeps. 4 doors and longer than my F150...POS. Older jeep drivers always wave.

I also ride a rice rocket (not obnoxiously) and harley guys can LMB!! I think they are just mad because they paid 20k+ for a loud, slow, poor performing, unreliable piece or :dung:.

I wave at all Jeeps, from the old 40's models to the new 86 models, and all Jeeps in between. To me a Jeep is a particular vehicle and not just any 4wd with a Jeep sticker on it, like it seems a lot of folks think nowadays. Jeep 1942-1986 R.I.P.

I ride a Harley and notice that metrics in general and the crotch rocket guys especially will never wave back. Must be too stuck up.

I gave up on the jeep wave. Years ago driving a jeep was a unique thing. You had to put up with certain hardships/quirks and it brought people together. Every jeep driver waved to every jeep driver it seemed. Then the snobbery came in. People who would wave at me when I was in my Commando on 33's or in my FSJ on ton axles and 37's are too good to return my wave when I am in my DD KJ, which is still lifted and on 31's M/T's with a rear Aussie. My Liberty is probably more capable ( and trail-tested at the Badlands and similar places with the scars to show it) then most of the "true" jeeps with drivers that are too busy ordering bolt-on chrome gee-gaws and form-over-function pieces to wave back. With the v6, 6-speed stick, and factory 241 Transfer Case and a 48:1 crawl ratio, that KJ is far more capable than the '79 CJ5 AMC 304 /3spd Renegade with a trac-lok on similarly sized 10-15 Goodyears that I bought when it was 2 years old. I won't even mention how much more power and better MPG that comes with the KJ. But hey, it is isn't a real Jeep despite its ability and being taken off-road (and not just posing) a few times a year, right?

Wanna know who killed the jeep wave? Jeep snobs.

Chrysler is who killed the Jeep wave. The thing you are missing incommando is that the Jeep wave was originally a Jeep thing. Honcho's didn't wave, Wagoneers didn't wave, Cherokee's didn't wave. It was strickly a Jeep thing and the word Jeep was synonymous with the CJ, and had been since the mid 40's when it was created as the non military version of the basic Jeep. Then you had those less informed who loosely used the term Jeep to describe any small wheel based 4wd such as the Bronco, etc.
Once Chrysler bought the trademark for their vehicles they've exploited the Jeep name and now this new generation thinks any vehicle with a Jeep logo on it is truly a Jeep and it's not. The true meaning of the word Jeep has been so distorted by Chrysler in the past decade + that people think a Liberty or a Compass is a true Jeep and nothing could be further from the truth.
It has absolutely zero to do with off road performance. It's about history and legacy.

Got it. Only the jeep you like qualifies as a jeep. Only your opinion matters. Even though JEEP Wagons and Pick-ups existed since 1946, which is incidentally the same as the first full production year of the CJ, it just don't matter because you say so. And just like the Liberty none of the Kaiser or AMC-era Waggy's or FSJ line or Commandos or the cool old FC's or anything but what you say is a jeep is a jeep.

But think on this: Since the very first CJ came out as the 1945 Jeep CJ2 , JEEP was the make (trade mark as you refer to it) and CJ was just one of many models that were produced by the Jeep make. Sorry, my myopic friend, even the beloved CJ was just a name tag on a JEEP model. And that doesn't detract from the CJ at all to anyone who loves JEEPS, just to those still upset because a lousy company called AMC got bought out from its Renault overlords in France instead of it just dying off. And, of course, to those who are apparently insecure int their vehicle and have to knock others to feel better about it. Me? I love jeeps and have owned over a dozen. And all were JEEPS.
