Hey, I'm new to the Jeep world (I'm a blue oval fan usually) and i'm lookin to start a CJ project. I'm currently debating between a CJ5 and a CJ7 . Then it's build from scratch, or frame off restoration. I'm a project car addict and know my way around a wrench, so I'm lookin for a challenge but have the rare parts issue. It's gouna be my girlfriend's fun rig and a part-time wheeler so comfort and capability are more important than anything. any advice as to where to start?

P.S. I'll do a full write-up as I do the project.

Welcome to the site! And here is susie's

Welcome to the site. A 5 or 7 thats a hard choice. I think if you are looking for either I would just look for a good base vehicle..Just my two since....

you mention comfort, for that reason look for a CJ7
CJ5s are short, hard to get in and out of and have a lot less aftermarket support. Plus less room in the back for shopping
now on that note, IF YOU CAN FIND A CJ6 , you just cured every problem with the CJ5 lack of room issue and will have a nice, rare CJ you will have 10 times the pride into than a 5 or 7

Welcome to our home away from home! jeeps are largely a matter of personal taste, but overall, a 7 will be a more comfortable rig than a 5 will be,and their 10" longer at the door opening. As far as parts availability goes, I would recomend staying with the years spaning from 1976 to1986, as the parts from that 10 year span are pretty much a direct swap over. Also, the after market parts are readily available and easy to find.

:ww:aboard.Good info on this site and people to help.Would be nice to see progress on your CJ posted for us to see.

Here's a:beer: for lil blue and one:beer: for susie as she could steal yours.

:ww:from the Republic of Texas.
CJ5 's are the coolest, 6's and 8's are a close second and 7's most comfortable and easiest to find parts for.
Who am I kidding? they all ride like a mechanical bull!!
Find one that speaks to you. It's a Jeep thing. It becomes part of the family.
find a 76 to 86 with as few PO mods as possible.

I personally like the looks of a CJ5 , but a CJ7 would deffinetly be alot easier to get in and out of, plus the longer wheelbase is a tad better for the trails.
Make sure you check out the frame near the spring mounts for weak spots. Also pre '76 frames are open frame whereas '76 on are boxed frames.
Like IOPort51 say's, "Find one that speaks to you."

Welcome to the site and good luck with your jeep endeavor.:chug:

IMO a 7 or an 8 would be your best choice.
