I purchased a manual temp gauge for my 79 CJ5 that has a AMC 304 in it. the old gauge was reading hot soon after start up. i pulled the old sending unit thinking i would just replace it quickly. The probe off the new on is larger than the hole the old one came out of. I have searched for another plug to pull to install the probe but cant locate one. so i have 2 questions are there different size probes and can someone tell me of another location to check. the current one is behind the distributor and to the right of the thermostat.

Save some time and effort, get the correct sending unit.

If you have an aftermarket intake it should have a large enough hole in the water crossover on the front of the intake, if you have a stock intake I beleive one of the emissions CTO switches in the water cross over in the intake will work, I have also seen them in the backside of the water neck as well. I am also with the other posters I like having factory gauges working as well as backup mechanical gauges:chug:

I'm running an Edelbrock Performer on my 360 and opening up a plug from the front water jacket next to the coil allowed me to thread in the sender for my Auto Meter sender (mechanical temp gauge)

Alternatively you could possibly adapt to a radiator hose sleeve

I know it's not a Jeep but when I did this on my truck I pulled one of the block drain plugs on the side of the block and it screwed right in.

I have two of the thermostat housing in my parts pile with the extra port for the sender unit.

The raditor hose block is an interesting idea. It would be nice to be able to accuratly measure the input and output differences. Speaking of which, anybody know what the warm running temp. of a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l cu in I6 should be? Rod

It should run at what ever temp thermostat you have in it. I think mine is a 195*
