That is the infamous Carter BBD computer controlled carb. It was used from '81-'90 in the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l CJs,Wranglers, and a few others.

Thank you... I actually have had very good luck with it over the years. I have almost 190000 miles on the engine. I believe the carb was replaced around 1990. Many the miles are highway miles. Trying to keep it all orginal, but i am currently doing the first half of Team Rush upgrade. Autolite -985 .035 gap. Got the wider cap and adapter and rotor... Just upgraded the wires too and got the stock ignition coil for $21..
Just got the Charcoal canister that rollbar suggested on his post. Next checking all the hoses. Vacuum canister looks good. In about a year I will do the second half of the Team Rush Upgrade...

I think it might have been 1983 and up. My 82 has the Carter BBD carb but not with the computer controlled thing-a-ma-bob on the backside or the computer under the dash. Could be they started with them in a couple states like Ca. in 81.
