'85 CJ-7, 258/4.2L 6cyl. Bought new in 1985. Full cage, Warn 8274 winch, Ford 9" rear, front/rear Detroit Lockers w/4:88 R&P. T-5 tranny and 4:1 t'case. 33X12.50-15 BFG/AT, MSD ign, on board air---
My Jeep came with the T-5 and 3:31 gears. I did the switch to 4:88 about 25 yrs ago when I put the Ford 9'' in the rear and a 44 in front.
I now have 121K+ miles on my '7'. This is my friends T-5 I have run for the last 12+ years. All I did with his was to remove the main shaft endplay and add new seals. I bought this T-5 for $AMC 150 .00 when he put a T-18 in his '7'.
I pulled mine when the front seal started leaking bad. Rebuilt mine(seals and shaft endplay was all that needed attention)and it has sat on the shelf since then.
Use only 75W90 syn gear oil. I use Valvoline.

Thank you for contacting Willys Works, he won't do you wrong.
Rob and Vic have a pseudo business arrangement. Love hate really, with a little sweet talking I bet Rob would ship Vic's Transmission . One thing though, I truly trust Rob's rebuild, I'm not so confident about the Transmission Vic has. Would you be money ahead, considering the core charge, with re-shipping your SR4 back to Arizona?
Let me see if I can reply and update to all without a family or other worthwhile interruption that gets me auto logged off and loses what I had typed so far!
First, Lumpygrits! You have a your original T-5 rebuilt and sitting on a shelf? Are you just keeping it as a spare? Ever think about selling it or did I miss something?
I did reply to the craigslist ad some one linked above back on the 8th(with a list of things I was looking for with a tranny as the most pressing. They replied back on the Sunday the 11th with a "we'll be at such and such intersection until this afternoon, hope to see y'all"
My thought was huh? What? A roadside massive used jeep parts stand? What town? I saw it too late to make it that day but I asked in a reply if he had brought all of the parts with him that day. They replied with only "yes all were for sale" then another reply "we will be there next Sunday morning u come by if u can see what you need". I studied the intersection (it's in Hot Springs about an hour at most from LR) on google maps street view and can see a couple of vacant looking commercial buildings and figure hope one of them is being used for storage or is some kind of flea market on Sunday's I am going down there for sure this Sunday. Ill buy a passenger fender on the spot if it matches the tan Renegade hood in the pictures.
What else? Great looking set up the NV4500 with twin stick posted above.! by Gert I think.
I should've put this ar the top!.. Great visit with Sean at Inland Jeep recommended by Hole. He's a sometimes from the ground up, and all around jeep builder. His clients tyoically go with automatics or heavy duty truck transmissions like T-18 , SM465, SM420 so he ends up with the more common stock transmissions he has to sell.
Of the list Hole provided...T-176 for $300 is gone as is the T-18 .
He still has the T-4 and the T-176 core. He did have a T-176 shifter but an overzealous young employee mistakenly threw it away! Enter your cuss words of choice here!
He doesn't reuire or even want a core and he ships. He recently shipped one to Texas, shipping cost was $125. Sounds a little high like LTL. I should've asked if that was FedEx ground. They ship up to AMC 150 pounds which is more tha a T-4T-176 weighs. I think I saw the weights on Novak Adapter site. I know Fed Ex max from a previous career.
Here is something tempting for me and someone here might want to jump on! He has a SM465 for with AMC input and Dana 300 output for $350. Those go for $1895 (rebuilt & tested) from Novak! My trail use isn't advanced rock crawling or mud pit fun so I don't think I want essentially a 3 speed plus granny low. Don't they have a nearly bomb proof reputation though?
Sean at Inland jeep gave me a numbe of another guy who has a T-5 . That guy says it's a recent rebuild, low miles for $500 and a T-4 for $375. He doesn't ship though. He won't mind if I have some one pick it up though. Sean would ship it but they are 100 miles apart.
Sean said he would be happy to sell me one of his (the guy that ships with$300 T-4 and SM465) his opinion is the rebuilt T-4 for $650 from Rob, who Hedgehog recommend is a better choice because it's rebuilt. I respect and appreciate his opinion
.
Well so much for a short and quick reply. As always feel free to keep ideas and suggestions coming!

You are certainly doing your leg work on this one. I'm glad to hear that Rob is still in the running. You could spin yourself into a true knot on this hunt, you are going to have to just choose one and stop looking. When you do, don't look back you are sure to find a better deal. I definitely wouldn't buy ANY used Transmission in the T-4 /T-5 category without a complete inspection or a rebuild period. Some of the rock solid truch Transmission might be worth the risk though.
With quality replacement hard parts for these transmissions SR4 , T-4T-5 almost impossible to find, you really need to scrutinize who ever you purchase a "rebuilt" Transmission from. Most are just a collection of used parts out of the best cores/used transmissions they had on hand at the time.
If it doesn't operate correctly after installation, are you prepared for more headaches... remove, ship back, wait, wait, wait, and then go thru the process again ?
I'm always an advocate of take your own Transmission apart and see what is wrong with it; I also believe trying to repair/salvage your own Transmission .
That way you know the condition of the unit before/after repairs are made.
Be advised with a used unit, you could be buying unknown problems.
Transmissions just aren't the area to cut corners in.

Most of the parts today for the Jeep T-4 /5 tranny are now china made.
Borg-Warner no longer makes parts for them.
That is why I won't sell my spare T-5 . It and the one in my Jeep are filled with BW parts.

I emailed the person Saturday night to make sure they were going to be there at the same place and times as the Sunday before. Their reply verbatim: "the part no longer there are in Jessieville" I asked in my reply if I could look at them there but haven't heard back.
I replied to another ad earlier last weekend and that got me a phone number of yet another guy who gets a lot of jeeps to salvage parts from. Turns out he is the local coordinator or director for Jeep Jamboree . I feel like I've hit the jackpot of an in state resource for all things Jeep! I text talked with him quite a bit and learned he has a used T177 from a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 6 cylinder Pickup truck for $250. He'll also have a T-4 when he makes the swap to T-5 in his Scrambler in a month or so. He's been driving the Scrambler for 5 years and I'd say it's not his trail rig by the pictures he's sent of his jeeps so maybe the T-4 has had an easy life.
He'll be in Little Rock today for another reason but has time to meet me at my house after to see my scramblers and talk about transmissions.
Yesterday I also started to more seriously consider swapping the entire drive train including the engine from my wrecked scrambler and selling it as a project. I'll see what the Jamboree guy thinks it would be worth. I'll post some pictures of it, maybe in a new thread to see if anybody on the forum wants to make a rough appraisal of it.
If I get some shots of the body damage in here, keep in mind I took them just a little bit ago with this old iPod. I'll try taking some better ones in the daylight and log in with a PC sometime later in the week.
