The short answer is, as of last night I now have one. Yay!!! . It's a T-5 but at least I'm moving forward now.
When I left home last night dressed and equipped to help remove the T177 from the donor jeep pickup, I didn't consider how bad traffic has become leaving LR in the 5:00 to 6:30 rush hour. What should've been an hour and 15 minute drive became nearly two.
Without electricity, a shortage of time and some extra stuff mechanically in the way to get the T177 out, the guy offered me the T-5 he had planned to use in one of his jeeps. I was a little disappointed and thought about finding another day or way to get the T177 out. In the end though, the T-5 is easier and less expensive. It will save me the extra trouble and expense of new length drive shafts, getting a T-176 tunnel cover and modifying it to accomadate the twin sticks. He also said I can trade back with him for the T177 later if I want and he'll pay me the difference for whatever $ I put into the T-5 such as seal kit or more.
As a bonus to last nights trip to his place, I've found a guy with the space, (various nearby country properties) time and means to acquire anything jeep that can be useful as parts or built into something. He has at the energy and passion and knowledge to keep moving forward on many fronts. Besides his trail beast jeep, he has a very clean, original Scrambler for Sunday driving and light trail. Several 70's era Wagoneers all drivers. A CJ6 on stands as a future project, and even a complete restorable Forward Control.
He made an offer on my red (wrecked) Scrambler which includes doing the body chassis swap I talked about in an earlier post. As another option, he has an amazingly rust free CJ7 tub (that someone foolishly cut the back out of) for a great price that would be more good body than I need to fix my red one.
First things first though. Cleaning up the T-5 and getting it ready.
New question... I've never been inside one. Should I open it up myself to see what it could use and put in new seals, leave it alone and use it as it is, or take it to a professional or experienced DIY Jeeper?
'85 CJ-7, 258/4.2L 6cyl. Bought new in 1985. Full cage, Warn 8274 winch, Ford 9" rear, front/rear Detroit Lockers w/4:88 R&P. T-5 tranny and 4:1 t'case. 33X12.50-15 BFG/AT, MSD ign, on board air---
Yes on seals. Also there is what looks like a freeze plug in the front. When you install the tranny, put a layer of silicon sealer on it. It's a known area for oil leaks.
Also-Check input shaft for play. If it has any-Shims go in the 'nose-cap'. I shim to '0' play plus, .005 shim preload.
I recommend 75W-90 syn gear oil for the T-5 .

While you have it open take some pics and show us the inside. Hopefully we don't spot anything wrong. But if we do at least you won't have gone through putting it in and then finding out.
