I got a clutch kit today and went home to install it on my 75 CJ5 . There were three pilot bushings in the box. One obviously won't work, it is two small to fit over the Transmission shaft. So one of the other two is the same length as the one that came out, but several hundredths of an inch larger in diameter. It just flat is not going to drive in. The other one is just a little shorter than the one that came out, but it is the same diameter as the one that came out. So tomorrow I'm thinking of installing the shorter one because it seems to be the only one that will fit. Anybody experience something like this before? Another thing, how do you get that bushing driven in there? I don't want to hit it with a metal hammer. I'm afraid of deforming it. My lead hammer is not really doing the job.

If it isn't just like the one that came out I would take your old one to a parts store and see if the can match it up I wouldn't use one that is different. And to install it just take a block of wood and put it aginst it and hit the wood with the hammer and drive it in. And you want to use a little grease in the center.

Agree with other post to visit NAPA with your original. Take the others along, too.

I put a Centerforce clutch kit in my 73 and the throwout bearing wasn't right. And I know the pilot bushing is different on my 73 engine than the donor engine from a later model CJ5 that I installed. By now most of our Jeeps are so far from model-year configuration that we can't assume anything.

If it's shorter, that's not really an issue as long as the inner and outer diameters are correct.
