Ignition problem, won't turn

Hello I am new to this site and to cjs. I recently got one and got it running but I was having problems with internal parts of the steering column I didn't take it apart I just replaced the whole column with a used one and put a new wiring harness in it. The jeep run great and everything worked for about a week but then I went out to start it one morning and I noticed that with the ignition switch off I could turn the steering wheel and I could hear a relay popping under the dash I grabbed the relay and it was really hot I'm not sure what the relay is? And then I tried to start it and all the happened was the starter solinoid made a weird popping sound. I tried to jump the solinoid just to get it to crank up and all it did was spark like its not getting enough power. But the battery is charged. HELP PLEASE.

:)You have described multiple problems on different circuits!
Obviously you have a short somewhere in the column..........or perhaps a wiring problem downstream of the column..............no easy fix there.
Get a wiring diagram and start looking. The relay you refer to may be a circuit breaker. It should be able to be found on the diagram by color coded wires.........see where it's path is going and what it's purpose is and look for a bare wire........the starter issue could be related but them again its anyones guess............the good news is there is not that many circuits...........again no easy fix. Good Luck!

Re: Ignition problem, won't turn

Those wiring diagrams for me have been a great help, not only for finding a bad circut, also for doing add ons like a c.b. radio, air locker, onboard air, and fuel injection. They can be found online, but are best purchased, I got mine from a repair manual.
