Some words of wisdom from Roadkill's Frieburger and Finnegan. This is why I own a CJ5 :

"You ever think how you’re driving past normal people right now that are just driving around in cars that are completely stock. They just get in their car, turn the key, and drive, and all they’re thinking about is where they’re getting to. They’re appliances, what else explains the fact they're all just shapeless blobs. If you can’t pull up to a gas station and strike up a conversation with your fellow man about your car…what are you doing?"

It's a difference in attitude.

For instance, I have a friend that sold me his mountain bike. I want to use it on the road so I'm looking for bigger road gears. He is all about the exercise and I'm about getting some place ASAP with exercise thrown into the mix. He simply couldn't understand why I wanted different gears. He was quoting revolutions per minute on his stationary bike, I'm thinking about MPH. He runs for miles on his tread mill, timing every inch of it. In my view he's spending a lot of energy going nowhere.

Another:

I got a new to me used car. It was in great shape with few miles on the odometer. While at a restaurant someone pulled out and scrubbed my car all the way from the front of the passengers door to the bumper. I was upset, especially since they got away with it even though we had witnesses and a license plate number. Not screaming idiot upset, but upset. My daughter simply couldn't understand why. The car still drove down the road so there was no problem.

I drive a CJ because of the experience, because I love the simplicity of it. the connection to everything around me. For others the driving experience is about being disconnected from what is going on around them.

I absolutely agree that todays vehicles are all about disconnecting you from the experience of driving. Don't me wrong, its nice sometimes to be in a climate controlled isolation chamber, but when that's all you know, its a problem.

Also, we live in a world that promotes the idea of having no emotional attachment to what we own. To be a good consumer, you're supposed to sell your car and other disposable items, and buy a new one. Without hesitation. So when you tell normal people you'd rather cut off your pinky, then sell your CJ, they just can't understand why. To them its just a hunk of metal parked on the front lawn. They've never owned anything that required blood, sweat, and tears to keep running. To them a broken axle, would be like having a broken screen on thier iPhone. Just dump it and buy a new one.

"climate controlled isolation chamber" had to giggle at that. My other ride is a fully loaded (over $10k in options) '96 GMC Suburban SLT and there's more nanny devices that you can shake a stick at. The trouble is in the GMC forums there is either lack of knowledge to fix these 'nanny devices' or lack of parts. Further it's not as easy to fab your own for these dang rigs while keeping them compatible with all of the other circuits and such.

Reminds me a little growing up 40-50 years ago on an island and a friend of my parents was having a conversation with them talking about modern boats (fiberglass) and how they had little personality and mostly looked the same as all fiberglass boats did-like plastic bath tubs. He was an ole salt from back in the day when wood boats were beautiful. At the time I had a wooden sail boat and still to this day I like wooden boats over plastic bath tubs, even though by far they are more work to keep up.

I sacrificed some blood for the Jeep about a 1/2 hour ago, hopefully it will be happy with that for a little while.

I have no interest or understanding of how the 2 most uninteresting blah cars on the planet are the #1 and #2 best selling cars of all time it amazes me absolutely nothing nice about an accord or camry the interiors are cheap synthetic fibers and plastic the radios and speakers are cheap the sound quality is blah they are tiny four banger motors with marginal output. and they fly out the dealer lots


do these people have any passion in their soul?

If I was going to make a guess on number 1 & 2 it is most people are just wanting good dependable transportation at a fair price and these cars usually deliver that. Nothing is 100 percent but these 2 models have been so mass produced for so long the manufacturers have got that down pretty well. Just my thoughts and also my buddy is a master mechanic and has worked at several dealerships for close to 40 years and has been recommending those 2 cars for more than 35 years if you are wanting something dependable. Never owned one myself !

For sure, it's so crazy how reliable they are, I was trying to get my oldest to get one but nope she had to have a Mini Cooper which is a great looking and fun driving car but has been falling apart since we bought it

Yeah my sister has the MC roadster. Not to many problems yet but still not even broke in yet. 40 years ago I drove around in a mini Moke in the Caribbean which is really just a British jeep like vehicle only smaller and lighter and can be picked up by 4 guys. Fun little vehicle

I thought it would be a good idea to get my wife a newer car like something built in this century because our '91 Cherokee was getting up around 245,000 miles. So I wanted something that got good gas mileage so we got a '13 Nissan Versa 4dr sedan with 32,000 miles. It runs good and we are getting 40mpg. So thinking this is really great and she has had it to Texas and many trips to WY and I'm thinking we made a great buy. Than at 88,000 miles it starts making a noise so we take in to the dealer and they tell us it needs a new Transmission because the chain is bad. What the chain is bad in a auto Transmission Lucky it was still under warranty so it didn't cost me anything to have it replaced. So we asked them what we need to do to make sure it doesn't happen again and was told that we need to bring it in for a tranny service every 30,000 miles at $190. My Cherokee has 245,000 and has never had anything done to the Transmission . But hay we are getting 40mpg. Damn new .

Lol my wife's car oil change costs $182 every 5000 miles at the dealer and it costs me $50 in materials at the house

New cars are boring. Anyone can buy a new "point and stab" conveyance but it takes guts to drive something 30+ years old.
Love the comment about striking up conversations at gas stations. It happens all the time.

I'm looking forward to this...... At the moment the extent of my Jeep conversations are usually the neighbors asking if I'm ever going to get it finished.... Gonna hang a sign just inside the garage that says "No, I'm not fished yet - Go away"
