I'm going to fiddle with a conversion I saw on the JF to possibly install a GM autodimming/compass/temp mirror in my jeep. The junk yard has several cars that should have the correct mirror for the conversion. I am curious if there is enough interest to make it worth my time for me to grab several mirrors and sensors and put together some wiring harnesses.

Personally I prefer not using a late CJ or GM glass mounted rear view mirror. Their large for the window and block the front view, or the spare tires in the way. I prefer the small round wide angle mirror mounted on my cage or a small early 5 or a flat fender rear view mirror without a cage if the spare doesn't block the view.

I'm sure others would like the idea, a plus if you can find one with a dome light option.

Never had a problem seeing anything with the 86 mirror personally.

Now that Ive got you riled up a bit Id actually be interested. I have to have one for inspection purposes here. It may as well do something useful and I like the compass / temp aspect. :)

It will. What do you think a kit would be worth? And would you guys rather have just the mirror and sensor with pigtails labeled so that you run your own wire length as you see fit or a full wiring harness run as I see fit?

To service more people sell both, nice idea. As for cost, unknown, what is your time worth?

I'm trying to gauge that. It looks like there are two gm possibilities, one that is dual display and one that is single.

Would 65 shipped for a single display, meaning you have to push the button to cycle between the two displays and 75 shipped for a dual display be unreasonable?

I haven't had a chance to do a lot of jy diving. But I did find a third option for a mirror with just compass. I didn't find any of the temp combos. But I was able to figure out wiring on the compass/auto dim mirror. It wasn't really complicated.

Shouldn't be too hard to make a clean harness. Just need a keyed 12v and good ground. It could plug straight into the fuse block for any one with the later model cjs.

I like the idea. Would like the temp as well though. Where would the harness run? Inside the ws frame and then behind the dash through the vent holes?

Would be up to you run through the windshield or around the seal. Temp wires could come through where the washer fluid line comes through the firewall then the temp sensor mounted behind the grill.

For the compass temp combo the issue is just getting to the mirror before they get picked clean.

I guess I did not think about running the wires tucked behind the seal. Good idea.

I'm going to run mine through the frame, drill a hole above the mirror and then snake through to the bottom.

You already wire it? I have a comp/auto dimmer combo one right now I could set up for you.

what if you run the temp sensor inside the cowl vent? i was thinking about the heat from the radiator?

I did this a few years ago. I have my temp sensor running all the way to the front bumper.
