Ordered a new 20 gal tank. Was reassured by the seller/manufacturer it would fit in the OEM spot for a Jepp with a 20 gallon factory tank... well I guess not... 68d446d412d3b141c2a21fdc174a04f5.webp

Looks like a YJ tank.

I believe it takes a different skidplate and bracketry. I had one like that I did not use and it had a bunch of extra parts and pieces.

This^ Then order one from MTScompany or Rockauto.

Rock auto doesn't carry it, maybe MTS, but in all my searches what I found is that NOBODY makes a replacement tank for this model. The one I bought is for a Jeeps with an OEM 15 gal tank, and this is an upgrade for that.

Sent the wrong one back, pulled mine out, after close inspection, I have two hairline cracks, one front one back, and both check valves at the top were not tight, in fact it looks like they had been stuck in with some sort of flex epoxy. All of this because when I filled my tank I had a steady drip from the skid plate.

After doing some research, I've learned I can plastic weld any crack with a polyethylene strip, thus sealing the holes.

My only question left is should I get new EMSV2 valves for the top, or try to reuse mine? they both operate, I can hear the valve flipflopping inside. Are new ones supposed to be installed with this flex epoxy or just installed with the rubber grommet?

THANKS IN ADVANCE

You are absolutely correct!

Double checked MTS, they don't carry it either. Here is their quote on the product I returned

"From 1981-1986, Jeep® offered an OEM 20 gallon factory "plastic" tank in the CJ's. Our 15 (and their 21) gallon tank does not directly replace the OEM 20 gallon factory plastic tank. A new 15 gallon OEM style skid plate, sending unit, top strap, end straps and hoses are required to install this 15 gallon tank. "

They do not make a replacement either

Looks like a YJ tank.

It's very similar in shape, although the YJ has the sending unit in the middle instead of offset (it is shaped differently, I do not know if they are compatible)

Ok, I dug around in the FSM parts manual and found a part# J5362498 and is a 20 gallon tank which looks like your tank. Unfortunately as you have found out it's no longer made. The rollover valves J5362541 are supposedly available from what I have read. If you can't fix your tank you may have covert over to MTSs 20 gallon tank but you would have buy the entire setup.

Just for fun you might try Spectra Products out of Canada; they may have what you need.

I put the MTS 21 gallon tank in my 81 CJ7 last year and it was a less than a half day job. I replaced most of my hardware but if yours is in good shape you should be able to reuse it. The kit I got from them had everything I needed to replace the tank.
