Having trouble with RMS on a 84cj AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l Used the double lip seal and thought I followed directions pretty well. Oil on lip, soap on backside. permatex 2 (should I have used RTV?) all around end tabs(ears of the lower seal) and chamfered edges of the bearing cap, careful not to get any on block mating surface. 80ftlbs torque on bearing cap bolts. 7lbs on oil pan bolts circling out from the middle. And 11ft lbs on the 4 larger bolts close to the corners. Leak is coming from the back, leaking down the dust cover. I used the 1 piece rubber seal on the oil pan and a drop of permatex in each spot top and bottom where the pan dips for the crank.
Any thoughts on what I might have done incorrectly the 1st time? any input is appreciated here.

Your procedure does sound pretty good, I really can't figure it out. hopefully you evenly tightened down the bearing cap. One last resort would be to try and tighten down the pan bolts a bit to see if the leak is at the seal between the main cap and the pan.

HAHAH thought I was gonna have to unbutton everything again but I found the problem. The dust cover, when put back ito place was apparently pushing on something causing it to leak. A few minits with a grinder and a reinstall, poof!!! no more leak!!!!!. Now on to the wallered ears on the axle shaft:) find used or upgrade to the chromollys?

Sounds to me like you did everything right. A lot of rear main seal leaks have actually ended up being oil leaks from the rear of the the valve cover that run down and looks like a rear main leak. I did the same thing you did and replaced the rear main seal only to find out it was the valve cover. That's all I've got for you. Check your valve cover to see if it's leaking in the rear.

HAHA Tommy looks like we posted at the same time :) I actually did the research before I started on the RMS and had come accross Where that with the valve cover had happened to others so I did check that 1st as I was not looking forward to the job. Fortunately its done now(Knock on wood) and thats one more thing I can cross off the list :)

Glad you were able to check one thing off the never ending list. Best of luck with the rest. I did see your post right after I made mine. Take care.
