Yoke capes vs U-bolts

I need to get a new yoke for the rear diff. Is there any advantage to the U-bolt style clamp over the U-joint Cap or are they just two different ways to do the same thing.

The u-bolts are easy to replace and no internal threads to wreck.
That said-I have never had much issue with either strap style, and carry spares of both styles with me on the trail since my 9" rear uses the u-bolt type.

I've only ran the straps and twice now I have broken the tabs that hold the u-joint caps in place and they have worked their way out. Yukon makes yokes for the AMC20 in both the u-bolt and the strap type. I've read that you can torque down the u-bolts until you deform the caps and as you mentioned, the threads can be messed up on the strap type. I guess I'm trying to find out if one is stronger than the other.

the u bolt is alot stronger. the u bolt it self is a larger diameter than the puny strap bolt, so go for the u bolt.... and you can over torque it and deform the cap. might check your FSM and see if it specs out a torque value for the u bolt straps

I would suggest locktite for sure. On the u-bolts you can use the locking style nuts, which puts an advantage there. I think they went to the straps to save money.

On the straps and u-bolts use only blue #242 loctite.
With the straps torque to 12-15 ft'/b of torque.
On the u-bolts, Just snug up the nuts, as it's easy to pinch the u-joint cap.
