Build Thread 1960 Resto Project

Update, finished working on my nephews four wheeler so it now time to get back to work on the 60. Got the rear floor cut out, time to lean up allof the edges and get he new floor fitted.

Very nice work on your restoration. I get a kick out of how you're prolonging the joy by getting a few parts at a time. It should look like it came off the showroom floor when you're done. :notworthy:
I'm using your build as a reference as I wade into mine. More rust and patches than yours and I'm fab'ing my parts, so I call it a rebuild.

I’m with you Bowbender. I don’t have the time or money to do a restoration so my 59 CJ5 project was a rebuild not a restoration. LOL

Thanks Bowbender. My plan is to restore it back to factory, it's moving along. :chug:

Thanks for posting these. I have a '60 CJ5 that's torn to pieces. I need motivation to start putting it back together but life keeps getting in the way.

Don X if you need any pictures I have a few hundred from when I started on my 1960 project. :chug:

You just might be hearing from me sometime. :chug:

it's been awhile since I have posted any updates so here we go, I have got the new rear floor pan all fitted and ready to weld it in then I thought I should replace the taillight panels first to ensure everything lines up. So aftr cutting out the drivers side taillight panel it looks like I will be ordering two new rear fender wells since the edges on the old ones are pretty rusted out and I don't feel like trying to make up 1/2 wide strips and welding them onto rusted sheetmetal. So here we go once more... love these old JEEPS.:popcorn::bang: the goodnews is once I get and install the rear wheel wells the complete front and rear will have all new rust free metal!!!!

just a side note? do you guys cut the tub/bed/cab in half and work on it that way? like the back seat area, and the front cab area? does this make sense.

Not really sure what you mean? I only cut out one section at a time then weld in whatever I working on.

Yes that is the best way to go you don't want to cut to much out at one time because then it starts flexing and your new panels will not fit right. So start in the front and work your way back our start in the back and work your way to the front. I hope this helps.

It looks Great! To be honest I do agree with the guys to try to do it by the piece, but it sounds like you have the same situation I had, everytime I took one piece off the next had more rot. The nice thing is you are replacing with a lot of new parts which helps. I did cut everything off from the firewall back except for the center tranny section. The best advise I can give is get a bunch of straps and clamps. I used a ton of the dollar clamps from Home Depot they work great, I also had a bunch of metal C clamps. Also take as many mesurements as possible if you do decide to chop it off. I had a hard top that I was able to use to get good measurements from also, and if you keep the old back half together you can always use it as a guide. It can be done just take your time! I really like your rear floor pan it looks much nicer than the one I used. Keep the pictures coming.:chug:

As we all know if never ends, but that's ok because when its finished all the rust will be gone!!! Thanks and I will be posting a few new pictures in the morning.

A few new pictures of the old rusted out taillight panel and the new no rusted one, just started to do the fitting and so far it fits really nice.

More outstanding work, looks great! :notworthy: Where are you getting your panels from?

it does, some of the pics looks like the tubs have been cut in half. thankfully on mine the floor of the front is the on place where there is a LOT of rust. its coming out anyway, and going to work with making more room under the seats, and possibly put an extra gas tank in there too. we'll see.

thanks again.
