My speedometer on my jeep works fine when the vehicle is cold. When warm the needle goes to zero. I have replaced the speedo and the cable. An advice how to fix

- 1979 Jeep CJ5 with 304 V8, T18 Transmission, Dana 20 Transfer case with TeraLow 3:1 gears, 4.88 axle gears, Detroit Locker up front and Ox Locker in back with 1 piece axle shafts, 36" SuperSwamper SX Tires, Shackle reversal, MileMarker Hydraulic winch, MSD 6A ignition.
You've replace the speedometer, the cable and it still won't work warmed up.
By the process of elimination my guess would be the speedometer drive gears in the TCase. Not much else in the mix here.
After warming up the jeep it's not the speedometer or the cable that gets hot. It's the TCase and more importantly it's oil. I am thinking the thick cold oil can play a part in pushing the gear that may be missing a tooth.
Pull out the TCase driven gear. It will be easy to see if that is missing a tooth or 2. There is still a gear in the tail-housing that may be bad. That's a little harder to remove but I think that's less likely to be the problem.

My 73 did the same thing. You only have to pull the rear output housing. Turned out it had a plastic gear on a knurled shaft. Put some Locktite on and it was fine.

Maybe the gear doesn't need to be replaced. If it looks good then maybe it's slipping on it's shaft. It's hard to find the gears for those older TCases (Dana 20 ). As 73CJ said maybe a little locktite will fix you up.

Thanks, it has been awhile and now that winter is coming to a slow close, I have got back into the jeep. Still haven't resolved the speedo issue. Replaced the speedo and the cable one thing I would like to know is when It seems that when the tires turn forward the speedo gear in the Transfer Case spins clockwise. when I put a drill motor on the cable and spin it both clockwise and counterclockwise, the speedo only reads in the counter clockwise rotation????
Secondly I inspected all the gears and still have the problem of cold operation vs warm non-operation.
Where should I put the loctite on the cable to Transfer Case or somewhere else?

most likely the problem
the notice in operation due to temperature is the clue.
some drive gears consisted of a metal sleeve with a plastic/nylon gear
when warm, the nylon spins on the sleeve; the knurling on the sleeve to hold the plastic gear wasn't enough.
to repair, disassemble as mentioned and loctite the plastic gear to the sleeve.
