Have you checked the toe in?

steering shaft to column worn out? Wheel bearings or ball joints?

Your problem still sounds like caster to me. Are you sure that you put the shims in correctly? The thick end of the shim should go toward the front thereby pointing the pinion lower. I have found 7° to 8° works best.
I had a 73 C10 Chevy years ago that did the same thing. I have no logical explanation for this, but it turned out to be the front axle U joints. I have no idea how this could happen with manual hubs, but when I removed the axle, the U joint almost fell out in pieces. Long shot, but worth checking.

I agree, it still sounds like a caster issue. But the other things mentioned should be checked also. And if you find one issue and correct, still check the others. Sometimes these issues can be a culmination of several small issues.

What is the caster now that is has been corrected?

Stop guessing, and get it to an alignment shop.

Thanks for the input...I have shims on it...5 degree. I have had it aligned. I did not have the specs before but i discovered that it calls for 5-7 degrees of caster. Will install new shims this weekend..And...YES!!! I INSTALLED THEM CORRECTLY...will report on progress...thanks!

Other things to consider would be wheel bearing tightness, frame cracks, and suspension componets like rod ends and drag link alignment which can cause bump steer. Also the Dana 30 front axle could be bent. I would think a good alignment shop would pick up on that.

Get a half inch drive ratchet and wrench and go over all the spring u-bolts nuts, all the shackle nuts/bolts, shock nuts, etc. Everything. When I purchased my CJ, highway speeds were sketchy. After going over everything, it’s been up to 85 a few times without an issue. (On a closed road of coarse) Remember, a loose rear will also affect where the front points.
