Hello Guys, I have a 1985 all original CJ7 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 6 cylinder . It ran well last week but today I tried to start it and it wouldn't crank up. It will run a few seconds if you pour a little gas into the top of the carb. It has the original electronic feedback carburetor.
Anyone know why this thing won't pump gas? Does the accelerator pump work off the electrical or is it manual. I am getting plenty of gas going into the carb. Is is just not pumping inside.
Any support would be appreciated. I know I can update to a better carb but I wanted to keep this car all original. it is in great shape. Thanks JDubyaM North

The accelerator pump is mechanical. So if you have gas, this might be an electrical problem. So check for spark to the plugs. This could be an issue with the ignition control module, coil, or distributor pick up coil to name a few. Even looking under the distributor cap might reveal something. You could even have a bad fuel pump since it would start then shut off. Updating the carb would be best if rebuilt.

It will crank if I pour gas into the top of the carb. It will run for 5 seconds. When I unscrew the gas inlet fitting to the carb, plenty of gas comes out of the tubing. So the fuel pump is pumping. The carb is not pumping gas inside. If it was the coil or plugs, it would not start and run for a few seconds. It will run a few seconds until the cup of gas I poured in is used up.

Maybe has some crud in the inlet/needle and seat ?
Check to make sure the linkages are hooked up and a clip hasn't fallen off.

Could there be a valve opening that is draining the carb bowl? I know these Jeep CJ7 carbs are set up to recycle fuel back to the tank. Could a needle be stuck causing the bowl not to fill up? The thing ran fine last week when I parked it. It has always taken a lot of spins to start it up. I think it takes a while to pump gas back to the carb after it sits a few days.

Think I could take the inlet fitting out and blow some air into where the needle and seat are or maybe use some of the "Deep Creep" cleaner??

I have had this same thing happen and I think it was the float was stuck because I tapped the carb a few times with a hammer put some more gas down it and it stayed running.

When was the last time you filled the gas tank or changed the fuel filter?
X2 on tapping the top of the carb's float bowl.
When was the last time the carb was rebuilt?

Update! Problem Corrected! Re: 1985 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 6 Cyl Original Carb Problem

Hey Guys, I got it! It had gunk under needle. Took it apart, cleaned it. Also sprayed some "Deep Creep " product in the carb. It hasn't run this smooth in years! I want to thank each one of you for your input. Happy Camper here now!

Good news :chug:
Do install a new fuel filter just because.

Thanks for posting and glad to hear you got it fixed. I once pulled a cloth thread out of a needle and seat. The see thru fuel filter I had came apart on the inside.
