Question, did You look closely at the ring gear, is there a front vs back? The bendix on the starter obviously has a slant on the gears to get it into place but does the ring gear have any similar feature?
I only ask as that was one of the comments when I called luk for customer support on my new parts.
Fairly certain I'm going to have to tear apart my drivetrain again but anxiously waiting to hear if your fiddling fixes your grinding noise.

Ring gear does indeed have a front and back. When I removed the ring gear from the donor flywheel I marked it.

Got up early (as usual) and the pregnant wife was out cold. So I took the time to take the front clip. Gonna clean and paint them all nicey nice. Nice that it gives me complete access to the engine and wiring. Really gotta go thru the wiring. From the looks of the motor mounts they should be replaced. Going to replace the Transmission mount as well. I see quadratec sells a kit. Just not sure if the stock Transmission mount will work because of the T-18 Transmission swap. I’m assuming that it does but you know the old saying about assuming.
Also had a little time yesterday so I paracord wrapped the OH S*#T bar.

Dang, you are quite torn down... Going to be a while till I find out if your grinding is fixed.

Lol. Not necessarily. At this point I need to get a starter. Put the Transmission and Transfer Case in and turn it over. I’ll jump the solenoid. Now financially with a baby on the way. It might be a bit.

So I think I wasted some time today. The technical previous owner was my wife’s uncle but he never laid a wrench on this thing. But he had a feeling that the technical previous owner had the timing off (when the PO owner had supposedly rebuilt the motor.). Well I lined the distributor rotor up to cylinder #1. Crank pulley mark was at 0 degrees TDC. Pulled the timing cover and found the marks on the sprockets not aligned. I lined the marks up and found the rotor lined up to cylinder #3. Hmmmmmm. But like an idiot I never confirmed that cylinder #1 was indeed at TDC. Looks like I’m gonna do it again. Also oil poured out of the crank when I pulled the crank bolt.

I am amazed though at how many loose or missing bolts I’ve found along the way.

I’m also not too keen on how much “sealant” is squished out behind the water pump. Looks like someone went a little crazy.

Good day today. Got the motor out and on the engine stand. Now to start taking things apart and inspecting.

But like a dumbass I pushed her outta the garage to pressure wash and of course the pressure washer won’t start and now I can’t push her back in on my own.

It’s getting hot down here in south Florida. I’m dumping sweat. Well got the engine disassembled. Wasn’t too bad. Only mistake I think I made was when I pulled cylinder 6’s pushrods a set them down to make a holder for all the components. Well I forgot which one came out of where. A little concerned about that.

Cylinder six shows that the head gasket was leaking. It’s super shiny. Number one also shows where the PO had used a screwdriver to find TDC. Everything is laid out all nice. Bearings show they need replacement.

Not really sure why I have these marks on the one bearing.

Crank looks good as well as the cam.

Or at least I think so. This is my first rebuild.
Pressure washed the block but still needs some love cleaning wise before paint. But I think I’m calling it a day.

Crank and cam look good in the pics.
Any maker's ID on the back of the bearings?

From these stampings a I can tell is that they’re Clevit 77 bearings. Looked them up. Supposedly high performance bearings.

that's pretty cool that its still standard size bearings in it

Spent most of the morning today working on my house. Was getting water inside the house. Tore down the old ship lap wood siding and found the PO owner had put up plastic instead of tyvek. Ugh. Removed all the wood siding on two walls and replaced everything. So today was spent caulking everything and getting ready for paint. (It never ends.). So I was able to squeeze in a little shop time before I take a nap before work. 7pm-4am. After finding more and more loose bolts on her I’ve decided to do a frame off. The realization that this is going to take YEARS has finally settled in. What started out as replacing the flywheel has turned into SO much more. But I’m ok with it. I haven’t pulled the body off yet but I am prepping to do so. But I started working on cleaning up the frame, priming, and painting. I did a small spot today, and I think I’m pleased with the outcome.

Wish me luck. I’ve never done anything this extensive before.

Good luck buddy, I'm going down the rabbit hole for my third time and still don't have it all figured out. One thing I've learned though is keep plenty of Band Aids in the tool box. If ya run out 'em a piece of paper towel and electric tape will work in a pinch.

Starting to feel like this frame is gonna take me five years instead of the whole build taking that long. 2.5 hours later and this is all I was able to get done. Rubber undercoating is the bane of my existence right now. Heated the undercoating up with a torch and scraped away as best as possible and then used a paint remover disc to get her down to bare metal. Three broken bolts so for. One in the steering box bracket. (I won that one and got it out). One in the sway bar bracket (it’s winning so far. Looking like I’m gonna need to drill and tap. And another where I won. Not to bad so far. It’s truly amazing that the previous owner drove this thing. So many bolts where I didn’t have to use any strength at all as if they weren’t torqued. Now for a shower.

The bolt situation gets better in the middle of the frame, the back is gonna suck like the front.

I used an angle grinder with the wire cup wheel on a lot of stuff seems to work really good

Believe it or not (I don’t wanna jinx myself) but except for those three bolts. And now one screw (for a bracket holding the brake line) everything has come apart too easy. It’s like the PO didn’t know what torque meant. A friend of mine called yesterday and told me the same thing about the wire cup on the angle grinder. I was using a wire wheel on a drill. Gonna swing by harbor freight (the Target for men) and get a few for my grinder as well as a face shield.
