1987 CJ with 304 and auto trans

Could be a special order, this could call for an inspection to look for anything odd. By now the tranny could have been out leaving a few tool marks and commercial grade bolts that have replaced the unplated factory type. If it was an oem tranny, then you really have a prize.

Ask for the vin and post it here, or PM me.

Good call on the VIN, can't believe I didn't think of that =) He is going to send it to me and I can send it to you. I have looked up those VIN decoderes before, but if it's a special order will that make a difference?

Not with the vin.

1JC and if the next one is a H it is a AMC 304 , and then a E for auto. Anything is possible this is Jeep. If it is this is way out of the box, but then again I have seen some strange things, like a SO J10 Honcho that was the Dealers runaround vehicle with some factory options and SO options & dealer options.

I went to school with the AMC Jeep dealers daughter and when Chrysler forced them to sell we (Mac`s Jeeparts bought all the leftover inventory).
So if its not factory it may be dealer option. But then again may be PO swapped.
Like a Dana 44 when everyone says no factory is AMC20 ?

I am looking at a 1981 CJ7 with a AMC 304 and auto Transmission . I did not think you could get the TF999 behind a AMC 304 and it does not have the QuadraTrac . Owner says it's all factory and I have not seen it in person yet. Is it possible to have a 81 CJ7 AMC 304 , Dana 300 , TF999 set up from the factory?

Cj7 Jeep

JeepD, I have a 1980 just so equipped, no QuadraTrac . I am a stick-shifter by preference, but my CJ7 works so smoothly that I actually think I prefer the TF999 . The thing I like best is that the small bit of slip at low RPM lets me pull out of muddy spots without spinning the wheels and slinging mud every where. And that goes as well for digging deep trenches in sand, until I get out and lock the front hubs.
My 2 cents.

IIRC, the Scrambler(CJ8 )had a the auto and wasn't it a 727 t'flite??
LG

Look at the build date also, it may be a carry-over.

We all love this kind of stuff!

He sent me the VIN and the 4th character is a C.. so guess it started life as a
I6. The next character is a "E" for the Transmission ? I just sold my 86 with the I6 and auto Transmission and it also had a an "E" as the 5th character. I haven't been able to find what that means.

I plugged both VINs into a decoder and both came back as I6 with TF999 and Dana 300 . On a couple VIN charts I looked up said the auto Transmission should be an "A".. The other options are B,M,N... not sure were the E comes from?
